One of the things I liked the most about the AoW expansion was the incredible number of new National Ideas that were added to the game. They added flavour and a unique feeling to many nations, and as a result these nations were often much more interesting to play as and against.

Now, with work on the 1.9 patch underway and focus shifting to future additions or changes, I'd like to make a humble suggestion for a further set of National Ideas to be added at some point in the future - namely, Canadian NIs.

This concept was already brought up and discussed a few months ago HERE, and the result was a nice little Canadian National Ideas mod. It did not, however, garner too much attention otherwise (i.e. from the developers), and I think the results of that discussion would be great additions to the base game.

I encourage you to read through the old thread, but for those who don't want to do that, here are a couple key points:

Why should Canada be given National Ideas?
Right now, the only unique post-colonial nation is The United States of America. A set of decent ideas for an independent Canada/Quebec, or a historically accurate Canadian colony would make things more interesting on the American continent. Much of Canada’s development and culture stems from the fact that she is NOT American and successfully resisted being incorporated into the United States. This gives the USA a more distinctive rival on the continent and encourages people to try another post-colonial nation, as well as making the American continent just more interesting in general.

The Ideas (as they are in the mod)
Traditions: -10% Ideas Cost, +10% Defensiveness

Hudson's Bay Company: +15% Domestic Trade Power
Canadian Militia: +10% National Manpower
First Nations: +1 Diplomatic Relations, +2 Heathen Tolerance
United Empire Loyalists: +1 Colonists, +10 Yearly Colonial Growth
Biculturalism: -25% Accepted Culture Threshold.
Fencibles: +3% Discipline
The Canadas: +10% National Tax Modifier

Ambition: +10% Production Efficiency

There are descriptions and justifications for each NI in the older thread in case anyone is interested in them, but I left them out here for the sake of clarity and brevity.

So - what are your thoughts?

I'm always frustrated with seeing Newfoundland stretched across the Canadian lands. Then, when Canada forms, it has the old flag & lame olive colour (both correct for the time period). I've always wanted to mod in a bright red map colour and the maple leaf - screw historical accuracy.

Maybe Canada could get some hockey related events (similar to the 'football' events I've seen in Europe).

I don't really like the first nations one, because it doesn't really fit Canada for during EUIV's timeline.

The relations slot, I can understand- obvious references to the French-Indian wars and the fact that even after British annexation of New France, the Indians and the British were friendly with each other because the British had hopes to use them as a means of blocking American colonisation of the interior and keep them under control- and the Indians did indeed fulfill that purpose. Albeit not very well.

But the heathen tolerance? There was never any integration of any Indians during the era; in fact, the only reason there was so little conflict between them was that "Canada" never had enough population to make such a thing possible. In fact, even spilling a bit over into Vicky2 era here, the Brits/Canadians basically took free land from the Indians through blatantly unfair treaties, even didn't uphold to that if the circumstances were unfavourable, suffered multiple rebellions/conflicts with them and the Metis, and then eventually the infamous residential schools. Which were not at all very successful at any sort of integration or assimilation at all. I mean, better than the Americans for sure, but that's like saying something's better than Hitler.

Personally, I say change the name to something like "Native Alliances" and make it a +2 relations cap. And add a +1 Heretic tolerance onto Biculturalism because Roman Catholicism was a huge issue when dealing with French Quebec.

Yeah, I have to agree with most of that, historically we didn't exactly treat the First Nations and Métis all that great.
