• Crusader Kings III Available Now!

The realm rejoices as Paradox Interactive announces the launch of Crusader Kings III, the latest entry in the publisher’s grand strategy role-playing game franchise. Advisors may now jockey for positions of influence and adversaries should save their schemes for another day, because on this day Crusader Kings III can be purchased on Steam, the Paradox Store, and other major online retailers.

    Real Strategy Requires Cunning

This thread is more than 5 months old.

It is very likely that it does not need any further discussion and thus bumping it serves no purpose. If you feel it is necessary to make a new reply, you can still do so though.

As the title suggests, this AAR is an attempt to describe the history of an EU3 game with minimal player intervention. Unfortunately, EU3 does not have an "observe" cheat like CK2 does, so my "strategy" for this AAR will be to bounce around between minor countries and watch the action, while playing as passively as possible. A second problem that I am aware of is that I won't be able to see the entire world at the inception of the game, which will hamper my description of events in parts of the world where I'm not playing. There are cheats to reveal provinces, but I discovered that using them causes other countries in the same culture group as me to be able to see them after 50 years, which can result in peculiar things. So I'm not going to use them; I'll just rely on save games to trace the action in other parts o the world. If anybody has better suggestions as to how to play a minimal impact EU3 game, please feel free to offer them.

The discerning reader will also have noted the "part two" in the title. This is, in fact, a continuation of a Crusader Kings 2 game. I have used raziot's conver to port my "hands-off" CK2 game into EU3, so I must thank him for the work he has put into developing this tool. I did some editing of the save game (mostly using EU3 save suite) after conversion. The most important changes I made were to fix the membership of the Holy Roman Empire, and restore the Kingdom of Burgundy, which got merged with the realm of the HRE. I also decided to modify the province populations, incomes and so on so that they now fall somewhere in between the CK2-based conversion and the "historical" EU3-1452 start, and performed a sort of crude normalization on the data so that the overall range of province values, technologies, etc. in Europe was comparable to what it would be in a vanilla EU3 game with a December 31, 1452 start. Those joining me on this journey now but with an interest in knowing what has gone before, may wish to view this thread:

http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum...he-World-According-to-Paradox-a-Hands-Off-AAR

Since this world's history diverged slightly from ours between 1066 and 1452 and is therefore an unconventional EU3 starting position, I am going to spend the first few updates showing Europe in December 1452.

Northwestern Europe looks like this:
Northwest_1452.jpg

The major players in northwestern Europe, listed below by the number of provinces in their realms. Note that I have included both parts of personal unions in the figures for number of provinces, but have not included the provinces owned by the vassal states. I have listed the names and the CK2 titles of the major rulers and their vassals, as well as their EU3 names as defined by the Papal Pronouncement of 1452.

FRANCE (FRA) – King Guillaume van Vlaanderen of France – 43
Vassals – AMG - Duke Renaud d’Ivrea of Valois, Flanders and Castille

NORWAY (NOR) – King Erlend Ylving of Norway – 30

I hadn't read the CKII AAR, but may well do now. Very interesting Europe, particularly the strong Frankfurt in the HRE, somewhat compensating for the lack of a Bohemia or Austria. Bohemia especially is usually a major player in central Europe at the start of EU3 games, so it will be interesting to see what happens in their absence.

Ominous that Castille is a French vassal, I look forward to seeing the state of play in Iberia!

Thanks for all the kind comments and interest. As far as Pierre d'Askeaton, he was a humble baron in Ireland that was appointed Duke of Northumberland after the old Duke's title was revoked by the King of France, England and Ireland following the Great English Revolt of 1415. With respect to the HRE, Bohemia is actually fairly strong, it's just that its main focus is in the low countries and Rhineland. However, neither Bohemia nor Frankfurt are HRE members. The HRE is mostly in Russia!

As to Castille, although France is a presence in Iberia, it's not as much of one as that might suggest. As you will see, most of Iberia has been ruled by Denmark since the Andalusian crusade of the early 13th century, and much of the north is ruled by Navarra.

Quick comment: I'd prefer to deal with "historical" questions in the CK2 thread and keep this one for discussions of the conversion and Europe's future.

The Northeastern quadrant is in a state of flux. The collapse of the Golden Horde in the 14th century led to a massive land grab by Norway, the Byzantine Empire, the Timurids and the Holy Roman Empire. Most of the small states in the are HRE members, even as far east as Astrkahan and Sibir.

Northeastern Europe in December 1452:

Below are listed the largest realms in the area in order of number of provinces. Note that I'm not listing states like Norway and Byzantium that have capitals outside this area.

You could mod in Hawaii or some similar state, with a unique culture, and then watch the game after revealing the world map.

In any case, I'm really looking forward to this AAR!

yeah , but he'd be known by anyone in his group , and give neighbour bonus for all countries in his group

a starting HRE map could be nice , too.

with that map , I guess we'll see the return of the BBB.

but I discovered that using them causes other countries in the same culture group as me to be able to see them after 50 years, which can result in peculiar things. So I'm not going to use them; I'll just rely on save games to trace the action in other parts o the world.
What about creating some country in the middle of North America with all provinces discovered and modded new culture or somthing like that?

I too would like to see an Imperial map, the emperor could be getting a massive manpower boost. Hopefully some depict wars between France the the HRE in store.

The Southwest is much less complicated than it initially appears, as it is dominated by two large, very decentralized empires. The Byzantine Empire is so vast it spawned 17 vassal states and is still the realm with the most provinces.

Wow, Nubia's big. Is there actually a Nubia tag that he got?
Byzantium's at a new height, bigger than before the Arab invasions. That's... huge.
Also, I am quite amused by the fact that Sicily owns part of Tripolitania and Oman and no part of Sicily itself.
