It's very disturbing to see the Empire get beaten down every time it tries to consolidate. Other than that, it's a great feat and I'm only sorry that countries don't really declare war on their own in HOI so thi could go on even further.

Technological, Social and Intellectual Developments, 1867-1890

The turbulence of the 1870's and 1880's in Europe failed to arrest the ceaseless march of progress. Unsurprisingly, some of the advances of the time were military in nature. Perhaps the most significant was the development of the rapid firing Gattilusio gun in Constantinople in 1871. But if the Empire hoped that it would give them a lasting advantage over their enemies, they were sorely disappointed as their accomplishment was duplicated throughout Europe in a few years and even spread to Asia in the 1880's. Advantage soon shifted to the nations best able to mass produce the weapons such as Frankfurt, Hungary, England and Etruria. Its most lasting impact was in the increased carnage of the warfare of the time. There were advances in artiller, as well. Kazan introduced the first steel breech-loaded artillery in the mid-1870's, but the still relatively high cost of steel meant that these new artillery spread more slowly than the machine gun.

The powerful new weapons required new tactics. By the 1870's, nations such as Dauphine and Morocco began experimenting with new defensive strategies such as building of trench systems and strongholds removed from the front that could be used to mount counterattacks after the lines were breeched. And though the Americans still had no standing army, they were at the forefront of thinking on how to better support troops, as the traditional approach of living off the land was increasingly untenable as armies grew larger. In small nations like Tyrone, Polotsk and Hamburg, considerable scientific study went into how best to preserve their limited manpower resources, using new techniques such as war games to simulate how battles might go and predict casualties under different scenarios.

The changes to warfare on the high seas in those years were arguably even greater. Though steam-powered ships had been around for decades, the dangers of a furnace on a wooden vessel had limited their popularity. But in 1868, the Swedes astonished the world by building a ship out of iron, more resistant to cannon fire than wood and far less vulnerable to fire. Leinster upped the ante twenty years later by building the first steel ships, reducing the corrosion problems that plagued early iron vessels. Even so, some maritime nations such as England and Castille obstinately remained in the age of sail throughout the 1880's.

Etruria and Leinster were at the forefront of offensive naval technology in the late 1860's, developing platforms to stabilize artillery on the decks and developing exploding shot that could damage the new metal ships. Etruria continued to lead the way in naval weapons development, producing larger caliber weapons with higher rates of fire, and developing an armored citadel to make it more difficult for their enemies to destroy their main weapon arrays.

As on land, new ships and new weapons led to the employment of new strategies. In Fez, there was increased awareness that coastal waters and the open ocean required different tactical approaches, and their bifurcated approach to training was soon adopted in other lands such as Leinster, Haiti, and Austria. In the 1880's, Leinster began the scientific application of statistics to naval combat, similar to those that were becoming used more regularly on land. By 1889, Leinster's approach had been surpassed by Castille and its naval war game simulations. Castille, along with Venice also improved the logistical support of military vessels.

Yet there were great advancements in other fields as well. Startling new works of art that used color and line to express the artists feelings rather than objective reality became popular in Etruria in the 1880's. What started as a correspondence between the American philosopher Proinsias Hoireabaird O'Brolachan and Thomas Hugel Grun in Zaparaozhie in 1872 spawned an entire school of thought called analytic philosophy. Their ideas which allowed the use of symbols to articulate philosophical arguments spread rapidly throughout Europe and North America and even to many of the newly civilized nations of Asia in less than five years. Ten years later a second revolution started with another trans-Atlantic correspondence, this time between Wilhelm Dilthey of Savoie and Edmund Husserl of Venezuelan Ontario. The new approach of hermeneutics offered a rigourous new way to approach the interpretation of historical and religious sources, emphasizing understanding the meaning of words in their historical context.

Some new ideas came from unexpected places. As industrial techology evolved, some began to think of animals and even people as analogous to biological machines, driven toward their destiny by their innate natures. After visiting the Funj island of Socotra, Kaleem Dawood in Oman hypothesized that biological species evolved from other species because individuals with advantageous traits were more likely to survive to reproduce. Professor Proinsias Gilmartin at Trinity University in Tyrone used Dawood's ideas to postulate that social welfare institutions needed to be disbanded to prevent less successful humans to survive, thereby weakening the human species. By the 1880's, the study of society had evolved to the point where it had to be broken into subdivisions such as social psychology, cultural anthropology, and sociology. The first university to recognize these distinctions was the University of Smolensk in Ryazan.

Exciting new ideas transformed the study of economics as well. In the 1870's a new breed of economists argued that classical economists were over-reliant on theoretical approaches that were not based on empirical evidence. Men such as Vasilios Nikolas in Armenia, Karl Knies in Dauphine, Bruno Battalia in Sardinia and the Genoese School emphasized the gathering and interpretation of historical data as the key to economic analysis. But the publication of Alfred Marschall's Principles of Economics in 1889 ushered in a new neo-classical approach to economics, still steeped in theory but with stronger mathematical underpinnings. The implications of these theories were not confined to the abstract and provoked intense public debate on economic policies that helped to fuel the numerous revolutionary movements of the era. Intellectuals in Hamburg began to study the process of revolution, trying to understand the circumstances which allowed it in some countries and not others, what strategies were employed to make radical changes...or to prevent them. The focus was primarily on the democratic revolutions in Denmark and Hungary, and the communist one in. But the new attention to class and notions of oppression led to the idea that women constituted an oppressed class of people and a growing movement that culminated in Toulouse granting women the right to vote in 1890. This decision made them the butt of jokes about their weak and hen-pecked nation throughout Europe, but inspired women's movements around the world.

The world of commerce was changing beyond the ivory towers as well. For centuries, banking had been synonymous with lending, but a new paradigm emerged in nations such as the USA and Austria in the early 1870's. Rather than lend depositor's money for interest, the new "investment banks" invested the capital in business ventures for profit. The growing complexity and diversity of business approaches, including such innovations as anonymous investors in Zaparaozhie, required new kinds of business regulations. Seeing a danger to consumers in the amassing of too much market control by one company, Polotsk imposed anti-trust legislation that slowly spread to other nations in the late 1860's. A series of fraudulent stock-market schemes forced Savoie to impose regulations on publicly traded companies that required them to make their finances open to public scrutiny.

But of all the advances of the era, it was probably those in science and engineering that were most significant in the long run. As iron rail networks and steam locomotives grew more widespread, rail became an important means of passenger travel as well as a way of moving goods for the ever-growing industries. The first steel railroads were built in Savoie in 1872, and their greater durability enabled faster travel. The Trans-Sibirian railway, completed in 1887, was a marvel, extending nine thousand kilometers from Narym Mar to Okhotsk and opening Sibir's vast hinterland to the world.

Always ahead of the curve in metallurgy, Polotsk pioneered new steel alloys and techniques for rolling metal into thin sheets in the 1880's. The old trade guilds that had dominated goods production since the time of Diocletian were being supplanted nearly everywhere by the 1870's, and were often derided for stifling progress. But ironically, it was in one of the Genoese guilds that the first assembly lines appeared, a technique which would greatly enhance the efficiency of production in the coming years.

Malinese scientists made advances in chemistry in the 1860's that allowed them to create a clean-burning fuel from petroleum. Soon, their cities were ablaze with gas lamps, astounding the Europeans. Europe was not to be surpassed for long, however, as the English countered with still brighter electric lights in 1886. This was the first demonstration of the versatility electrical energy and promised to lead to many new inventions in the coming years. A new form of engine known as the internal combustion engine was developed by the Dauphinese Nikolaus Otto in 1881. Lighter, more efficient and safer than steam engines, the internal combustion engine soon found use in tractors, enabling faster tilling of the soil than horse-drawn ploughs. But some foresaw a world where these engines could lead to small individually owned vehicles travelling at the speed of steam locomotives without being confined to rails, or even flying machines.

Europe remained the most advanced region, but increasingly, major innovations were appearing in the Americas and Africa. And many nations in Asia were only a few decades behind, a point emphasized when the Japanese developed their first machine guns in 1890. The 'civilized' world was growing by leaps and bounds and it seemed likely that the world's remaining primitive nations had little choice but to progress or perish.
