A Good Book for EU:ROME Fans

Warfare in the Classical World by John Warry.

It's a big, glossy softcover with loads of color photos and illustrations. It's mainly focused on military history from the Homeric Age through the decline and fall of the Empire. This book makes a great companion to EU:ROME.

I haven't read that one, but I've read a few of Adrian Goldsworthy's books. They're all very handy as well.

funny you should say that, I stole a history book of greek as well on high school, got a phone call back home, whether I accidently took that book...
They couldn't think of noone else to steal such a book .

Try 'The Grand Strategy of the Roman Empire' by Edward Luttwak. It tries to wind together changing frontier deployments and present them as the result of a conscious policy modified over centuries. It's contentious, but unusual in that frontiers generally appear in the literature only to be violated by the headline-grabbing campaigns that ancient and modern authors tend to dwell on.

I really love this one. Very instructive. I also own a similar one focused in ancient warfare and weaponry from greece to rome, it's great, but it's only available in spanish.

Warry's book was the one that opened for me a new chapter in my life; The art of history. 15 years after i stole the book i have advanced from a mere superficial reader who was upset of reading his country's failures against the Romans, to a full blown amateur historian that studies the evolution of ancient armies and their impact on society, their tactics, arms and their ability to adapt to the different tactical demands on the battlefield and the causes of defeat in war instead of defeat in battle. Needless to say i have come to admire the Romans. Ten years ago i wouldn't even have contemplated with notions such as that the main reason of Roman victory in the Punic wars was that the Latins were at an earlier stage of their evolutionary development...

Yeah i have this too(stolen from the library of course). Great read.

Although i truly believe that P.Connolly tops Warry.

The finest analysis of the Punic Wars i've ever read (taking pains to prove which route Hanni took to cross the Alps, suggesting that Paulus was in command at Cannae instead of Varro contrary to popular opinion etc) and a harsh critisism of the Greek manouevring in the second Median war, unglorifying their achievements at Platea make it a top callibre read. It does lack though in the description of the early imperial roman army.

Do you guys know some good book about Carthage? Detailing institutions, tradition, army, etc? I've been struggling to find one, but the only good ones are about warfare and army, giving little information about the institutions, politics and social issues.

Preferably I'd prefer something not too academic. I've found some academic works which may be very detailed, but I'm no historician and I would find those too dense.

Currently reading Rubicon by Tom Holland and it's great. Talks about Rome's transformation from a Republic into an Empire and it's a very good read. Definitely puts me in an EU Rome mood.

I know your all talking about books but have any of you ever used Wikipedia, it might not be the best, but it's definatily a good place to start if your intrested in any historical topic.

On another note ZZrow Graff you ever read that famous WW2 book by Albert Speer?
