afaik the melee animations are sorta random and might display as a kick, but the attack itself was actually a punch (and vice versa) - also elevations *may* play a role as well.

no may, elevation does play a roll. The game does it's best to pick a melee animation based an the height difference, target location, and what parts still exist for the attacking 'mech, but sometimes you get a kick to the head when it would look comical.

In fact that is a little bit frightening, but it would fight with expert timing.

The melee animation often don't make sense in relation the damage they deal. A punch to the side torso result in broken leg etc. It isn't a major thin but it would be nice if the animation would give a decent prediction of what area will take the damage.
