Thank you for making another amazing game. It is inevitable that an undertaking this large and complex is bound to have some flaws. After a couple of years there are many flaws in this game that still decrease the enjoyment, challenge, and the realism that HOI 4 delivers. There are also many very legit complaints by fans in the forum. I don't blame the developers, but I do have one small suggestion.
It seems to me that over 90% of the problems I read about on these forums would be taken care of if the AI had any idea what is was doing. I know that writing a proper AI for all of the countries involved, dealing with an infinite number of possible situations and strategies is not possible in this day and age. However, there is a very simple solution.
Add a game mode where you allow a player or players to control multiple countries at the same time.
Before people come on here flaming this idea. Remember this would be an optional mode for those that want it.
I can get 2-3 friends together to play an epic game of HOI 4. However, it is literally no fun at all when I play Italy and friend plays Japan and the computer playing Germany is totally inept. Finding 7 people to play this game together at the same time so you have human control of all of the major powers is practically impossible. Even with 7 players the minor powers still take actions that diminish the challenge and the realism and remove the fun from the game. I'm not telling anyone anything new.... I frequently just slam my head on the desk after many hours of play and the AI does something totally boneheaded ruining my entire game.
My solution would be like this. Players would be able to pick individual or multiple countries to play. Obviously two players could take all of the major powers of the Axis and the Allies.
Another possibility would be for players to control a single major power, when other countries are influenced to share their ideology and join their alliance they would gain full control over that country. A three player game where someone takes Germany, the UK, and Russia would be perfect for this mode. One player trying to push each ideology in the game, making alliances of convenience and desperate need.
Minor countries that are pulled into the war by war declarations would be controlled by a player on the opposing side that shares their ideology the best. That player can always opt to just let the AI do the fighting. Obviously a little tweaking of diplomacy and events may be needed for this mode to work well, but it is very doable. Writing an AI that is even remotely capable of combat strategy would be immensely more difficult for the programmers.
With this game mode as long as the developers can write a decent AI for getting a country prepared for war (while it is still neutral) then the human can take over once the actual fighting starts. I think writing a competent AI for war preparation (i.e. building units and placing them for general defense of the country) wouldn't be nearly as hard as writing an AI that knows how to do a proper amphibious invasion and occupation.
I also believe that coding this as an optional game mode would not be nearly as hard as trying to fix the thousands of bad choices the AI makes in this game every time I play it. This is something I would spend my money on.
Love the game. Just wish I could use it to have a better simulation of WWII without needing an army of people playing it.
