I have a few q's concerning HoI II

1- I noticed an "Axis" flag which consists of the Nazi flag with the swastika replaced by an Italian Fascist Eagle. Does that mean there is a possibility of a unified Axis nation?

2- There are a lot of Provinces that should be "Urban" Paris, Rome, Tokyo ect. to name a few, and there are pictures of the provinces in the game files, yet they dont seem to have been implemented into the game. How can I implement them?

3- How come one can create the DDR by having a "Stalinist" nation coup the German one, but can't creat an FGR when having a "Democratic" nation coup GER?

Thanks

2. They are not urban due to gaming reasons, e.g. Paris was not a massive stronghold in WW 2 compared to Moscow.
More likely, they are not Urban for game-balance reasons. Players would complain if an AI-Germany routinely stalled in front of Paris while trying to beat an AI-France.

It's still a completely laughable farce that Tokyo is not considered 'urban territory'. If there's a single province in the game that should be urban, it's probably Tokyo.

But, I guess we can't have that as a 'fortress' either, right? 'Cause God knows Tokyo would have fallen like a house of cards if just a few platoons of Marine infantry had ever come ashore. It would have been secured in a matter of hours, like Denmark was.

I would normally say, "Make me understand this", but, since it's so incredibly asinine - the point is moot.

 x 1k

Axis is used in certain 'battle-scenarios', the one in Italy IIRC f.e.

You can mod them to become urban. First go to C:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron 2\config\province_names.csv. Open this file and search for the provinces you want to make urban, Paris f.e. is province-number 56

Then go to C:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron 2\db\provice.csv, open this file with Wordpad, look for province 56 (prov56) and then chance this

Code:
56;PROV56;Paris;France;Europe;Temperate;[COLOR=Lime]Clear[/COLOR]

to this

Code:
56;PROV56;Paris;France;Europe;Temperate;[COLOR=Lime]Urban[/COLOR]

The two big ones in Europe, Rome and Paris, are not Urban becuase they were open cities due to the large amount of cultural artifacts that would be damaged by fighting: if an invader reached the city, the city was theirs. Therefore there is no basis for having the province be urban as a defender should not get that bonus.

As for some of the other cities outside of Europe, it's mainly for game balance, as has been said.

You cant change the game slightly to do this. Its virtually impossible to make a game that involves chinese and let them play it. The fact that you can play Japan or Tibet as a seperate nation is allready over the edge.

In the German Version yes. "Heimler", "Gorink" etc. Would not matter a bit more annoying is the lack of pictures which always makes you think for a moment- Is this a lvl1 faceless Mj General?

I guess that since Tokyo was mainly built out of wooden houses, the city wouldn´t really be a place of "urban warfare". The defense would have been fanatical, though.

That's hilarious - you must feel like you're on some kind of quiz show, trying to solve a puzzle. Almost have to constantly be using some kind of 'decoder ring' in the back of your mind, just to keep track of who's who.

I'm pretty sure that the province that encompasses the area of 'Tokyo' on the map is one of the most industrialized & highly dense-populated areas on the world... not just today, but back then as well. So what's the idea.... that in a real 'fight' the enemy would just burn the city to a crisp, and the terrain would become (mostly) cleared all the sudden? I dunno about that... it wasn't just some 'walk in the park' trivial thing the USA did, which finally resulted in the destruction of Tokyo. That kind of intense firestorm would have taken out any city. Of course I don't need to tell you about Dresden - it got so hot everything practically melted (Hamburg as well, I think)... the fire doing some bizarre things as it struggles for a tremendous amount of oxygen.

It wasn't 'tactical bombing' like what happened in Stalingrad... where you're then left with a bunch of rubble & ruins the enemy can use for an effective defense. Granted Stalingrad may have been a little more steel and concrete than Tokyo, but my point is that when facing wave upon wave of hundreds of B-29s dropping NAPALM bombs and creating a mega-firestorm, it wouldn't really matter. So, unless somebody is attacking Tokyo with that kind of air power, it should be considered urban.

As a side note, my grandfather was a paratrooper in the Pacific in WWII, and was scheduled to have been part of Operation Downfall (and probably would have been killed), had the Japanese not surrendered. Anyway, he was part of the post-war occupation, and gave me vivid accounts of what they found waiting for them, if they invaded via combat assault. Virtually every house was fortified to the rooftops. Gun positions built into the walls, etc. Pretty nasty stuff - casualties would have been very high. But yeah - 'urban fighting', extremely.

also, I wondered, is Paradox a publically traded company or Private?

Thanks for the replies, and I understand not making certain cities "Urban" but how can I get the right pictures implemented for them...I would like to see a major city like Paris to have a pic of Paris in it, if it is in the game file...

and what scenario was the "Axis" flag in.....I didn't see it.

If you make the Paris-province urban, the picture of Paris will appear in the game.

The Axis-flag isn't used in the game, I was mistaken. It is the 'Allies' tag that is used sometimes.

You will often see things in the game-files that you won't see in the game itself, usually these are leftovers from the development progress.
