Since my last post got hijacked by spammers...

Playing as Denmark, what's the best way to take on the HRE? I have a few de jure claims on some provinces, but I am in no position to take on the HRE. What's the best way to go about it? Just wait for an opening?

Don't.

Alternately, wait. Civil war is coming. But even with a decade or two worth of mercenaries you might not be able to do enough damage to make the Emperor grant you your vassals back. On top of all of that, the HRE has more than one of your territories so you'll need to pull off the same tricks again.

I would strongly suggest worming your way into Sweden's elections or Conquering England to pass the time until an Emperor angers his vassals sufficiently. There are enough coastal regions in either that mobilizing the extra troops from won't take too much more time, and the additional troops might mean you recover fast enough to take advantage of the truce ending. (In the spirit of full disclosure, I only tried to press Denmark's claims to HRE land when I was Scandinavia and owned most of Britannia as well)

Good luck.

form Empire of scandinavia first.

Throuth if you are very lucky, Hre may have a big revolt with some duchy where you have claims become temporary independent. Then if you are quick you can snach county or 2.

I would recommend trying using your chancellor to sow dissent between the lord of the county/duchy you want to take over and wait until the lord revolts and take your chances during the revolt.

Do.

You (can) make a LOT of money. So save up about 1.000 cash or thereabouts and hire two of the largest merc bands. Make sure you've married into the ERE, France or Hungary/Poland. Also make sure the like YOU better than the HRE. It IS better to attack while they're busy with civil war or something else, but not nescessary. Immediately assault the County you're waging war for, then move to take the Emperors private holdings.

Sowing Dissent doesn't work as well as it used to. Now you are limited in how the Duke of Saxony/Brunswick rebels (he does no longer want independence), so it's better to sow dissent in the Imperial capital, where you can cause rebellions in the south.
