Here are a few questions

* how do I become protestant ?
Is it about having rebels and let them "win"

* how do I join the HRE ?
I would like to join HRe as France or Denmark

* When does the leader shock/fire bonus from Offensive ideas apply ?
Is it during combat (where a modifier is added on your base shock value) or when generating a general (who will get a bonus +1 to shock)

* Does military tradition apply to calculating the stats of kings/heirs when you use them as generals ?

* How come the AI always seem to get super-strong generals (4/4/4/4 or better) while my 80 tradition generals end up like 3/2/2/1 ? A m I unlucky or does the AI reroll generals (spending 50 Mp everytime) until it gets a good one ?

1) when the reformation hits go to religious tab and convert, button in the upper left
2) you need to be small and have max relations with the emperor, thb not worth it as France or Denmark. Alternatively become emperor by vassalising electors then add your capital to the HRE
3) on rolling your general
4) I dont think so but may be wrong
5) the AI will happily re-roll for generals, lucky nations get +1 leader stats, many AI's take offensive

So if I understand correctly, once I get high army tradition and offensive doctrines, I should stop using my rulers as generals

if you want your ruler die, you should continue, because a ruler leading an army has some chance to die during the fight.
Or if you need some extra general and you have reached you maximum number of general, you can make use your leader as general, but still he can die.

Never make an above average ruler a general, not only do they have a chance to die in battle but get an increased chance simply for being a general

Military tradition applies to ruler generals as well, doesn't it?

In a republic you usually do want to make your rulers into generals, since the downside of losing one is small.
