The Future of Monarchy
By: Frydryk Augustyniak
With the on going constitutional convention going on, several important questions are being raised about how Danubia will run in the future. The fore most of these questions is the now tired debate on Monarchism. Champions from the left wing state that state that Monarchies are inherently antidemocratic, authoritarian and incompatible with Danubia as a whole.
The weakest of all the arguments is by far that Monarchies are inherently antidemocratic. Advocates from the left wing state that every person has the right to choose their own head of state and Monarchies are not popular. These arguments sound good but, they all lack the same common weakness – they are all just radical demagogue.
In states such as Silesia the people do have their right to choose their head of state, and they have exercised it. Fore in Silesia the people have agreed to a constitution that implements a Monarch as their head of state. This means that the Monarch is infact the people exercising their right and its continuance to this day preach the desire that Silesian want a Monarchy and are happy to live under one.
Now the left wing also advocates that Monarchies come into being without consulting the people and that people don’t want them, so therefore removing the Monarchy is doing a good deed. Yet this is not the truth, as a Monarch that has come into existence post 1848 has been by the will of the people, not by someone forcing their hand and not by corruption of politicians. The Silesia Monarchy came into being after a series of 3 referendums that all showed that the people want a Monarchy, by a significant margin and this was reaffirmed in 1863 by another referendum and this time by a 5/6 majority.
Authoritarianism, the left wing would have you believe only comes from Monarchs and only Monarchs. While some Monarchs are authoritarian, they only exist in non democratic forms. Constitutional Monarchies, the ones found in Danubia such as Albania and Silesia are the exact opposite of Authoritarian. In both cases the Monarch has little power and any powers they do have are only valid if asked by the House or Head of Government or in the event that a dictator has seized power. This means that a Monarchs only power’s are there because someone must hold them and they are the least partisan member of government.
Now advocates from the left wing state that Monarchy is against the spirit of the revolution, therefore incompatible with Danubia. This is a rather silly argument because the revolution was to remove authoritarian rule from an Absolute Monarchy. As of now there are no Absolute Monarchies in Danubia and all states with Monarchies were never part of the initial revolution so the state never had this ‘Revolutionary Spirit’ anyways.
So while the left wing advocates the removal of Monarchy and the Right wing the keeping of it you now will be properly able to decide for yourself with the facts straight. Yet if the time comes that Silesia’s Monarchy is overthrown by Vienna, we must ask ourselves, does this Federation have good intention, or is it just a façade to a Authoritarian dictatorship?
((Not my best essay but, I didnt put too much effort since this is only a game.))
