Well, if the Spanish goverment had backed the submarine project, it is posible that Spain had a quite good submarine Navy, specially if Spain is not backward as in OTL. The same goes for the Autogyro, if that project had been also backed, Spain could have developed the helicopter tecnology (and a good scout craft).

I mentioned Primo de Rivera as leader of Spain, for example winning the elections or, if there is a Civil War, in one side (fighting left-wingers or monarchists, depends of what ideology had the other side). The reason for "him instead Franco" is that Franco was very conservative, and that mentality tends to hinder tecnological progress.

Spain powerful? Well, when beginns the divergence with OTL? Late XIXth Century or before?
Which Primo de Rrivera, and what would Spain be like with him? As for the submarine project and Autogyro i'll look into them. But the thing is, the Allies need members because the the United States is having problems at home, the Soviets want to sitback and see what the Axis do before making there move, WWI weakend the British Empire so they and there ally Japan wish to sit this upcoming war out. So all the Allies have left is France, belgium, and Poland, So the world needs more nations that will fight for liberty.

I was thinking in the son, because the father already ruled from 1923 to 1929. But if you need a truly strong and democratic Spain, here is what I think is the best idea:

All begins in 1833 with the First Charlist War, more exactly in 1837: The Royal Expedition of the Charlists has reached the walls of an unprotected Madrid Just at the same time that another Charlist army arrived from the north. Two rebel armies stand in front of Mari and the closest Liberal army is five days in the rear of the Expedition. Because unknown reasons, Charles (the absolutist pretender) did not took the city and fled back to Charlist territory. Not in TTL.

In TTL Madrid fell to the rebels, Elizabeth II and his mother, the regent, are captured and forced to abdicated to Charles, who now is Charles V. Some time after, absolutism has returned to Spain, liberals went underground and Charles V helped the absolutist king Miguel I of Portugal to regain the throne. Both countries are now ruled by absolutists. Some decades after, the liberals, crushed under the boots of absolutism, have become more and more radicals, wanting nothing less than a republic. Moreover, the common persecution of both Spanish and Portuguese liberals has made them to forget their differents and join forces in a common front. In 1868, the 30 years of political inestability (including numerous liberal military coups and some open rebelions), coupled with an economic crisis and the declining health of the Spanish king John III, cause the ignition of the "Glorious Revolution", which succesfully defeat the absolutists first in Spain and then in Portugal. Shortly after, the victors, influenced by the recent foundation of Italy, proclaim the Federal Republic of Iberia, thus achieving the political unification of the Iberian Peninsula.

Iberia would face her own challenges, such as the Worker Movement, colonial wars, political crises and such, but overall, she will survive.

If you like this idea, we can expand it to fit with this mod. :)

Ok, so how big should it's empire be and why would having Portugal make Spain powerful?

In the smae way Two Sicilies and the Papal States helped Italy, or Bavaria, Baden and Würtemmberg helped Germany.

But it is not only about territory or population. TTL Iberia is far more progressive and innovative than OTL. Because that, industrialization grows faster and bigger than in OTL, and because that, the Amy and the Navy are also stronger. The Empire, without potential loses, should include the Spanish colonies plus the rest of Morocco and the Portuguese ones. Perhaps there can be more Central Africa for Iberia (near Ecuatorial Guinea) or even more land between Moçambique and Angola (the old Portuguese dream of unityind both colonies, which can lead to colonial conflicts with Great Britain). It is also possible that the Dominican Republic returned to the fold and stayed in Iberia (in OTL she returned to the fold, but that only lasted few years).

Hi guys. So was there any south american country that could have been a great power by the time of the 1930s? I'm asking because south America never has role in the world in any mod, and it gets pretty boring down there doing nothing for all of the game.

Good question, if you look in the Internet you would find some, nearly all of them actual inventions, which are quite ugly and uninspired in my opinion. The original one is simply horrible. My advice is one I saw years ago in a now defunct Iberist forum. This:

The idea behind it is simple: It follows the other two great Latin (European) nations, France and Italy. France was a big inspiraton for Spanish inteligentsia despite the Napoleonic Wars (in fact, Spanish intelectuals actually colabored with the French and until twenty years ago, French was the foreing language taught in Spanish schools). It also shares the flag-of-unification thing with the Italian one. Same design, nearly same colours, same culture and same unification success (with Italy). Moreover, both red and yellow are the colours of Spain, whilst red is also one of the Portuguese colours, and white is one of the colours of the old Portuguese flag. Why not green instead of white? First, it destroys the like-France-and-Italy idea. Second, that is plain African. Third, the God of Aestethics would curse this mod forever. :p

The shield is the Spanish Republican one with the Portuguese coat of arms and sphere added..

Brazil has a point. Also Argetina united with Uruguay (they were united), Paraguay, Chile and Bolivia is not unthinkable. If the Great Columbia or the Peru-Bolivia Confederation managed to survive, they could also become regional powers (The same goes for the Federal Republic of Central America or the Second Mexican Empire).

I do not think it is unrealistic, but quite interesting. :)
