A Crusade at 900 AD?

I'm playing as a Middle Francian Duke and the Iberian Caliphate has almost swallowed up Asturias and has even expanded into Toulouse (aghast at this). Pope has called for a Crusade to Aquitaine at 900 AD. This is the earliest I have ever seen but I guess times are drastic? Is this done to counter rapid Muslim expansions into Europe?

Yes, if a non-Christian holds Toulouse, the usual Ummayad entry point to France, and the year is at least 900, the ability to call crusade is unlocked earlier.

Or if Rome falls to heresy or heathens. Then Crusades are unlocked earlier.

If certain regions that are important to a religion (either holy sites or their heart-lands) are owned by another religion, crusades or jihads can be triggered early.

This happens in almost every 769 start game since the Conclave update, with the Ummayads taking Toulouse and/or Aquitaine. Sometimes Lombardy takes a few duchies in Africa, which also triggers Jihads early.

Crusades will unlock if the year is 900 and

• Rome is not held by a Catholic
• Toulouse is not held by a Catholic
• Paris is not held by a Catholic
• Constantinople is held by an infidel
• Byzantine Empire is held by an infidel
• Athens AND Corinth are held by an infidel
• Cologne is Christian and is not held by an infidel

OR

Crusades will unlock if the year is 1090 and

• Jerusalem is held by Non-Christian
