I had a couple of what I feel are reasonably small and easy to implement changes as regards character names that should enhance the roleplaying aspect of the game:
-Why isn't there a random name generator when your child is born? It would at the press of a button choose a cultural name befitting the gender of the child. EU4 has it an there's less emphasis on role playing in that game than this one. Puzzling why it isn't in the game already. I have to awkwardly bring up a list of all Norman males in my realm in order to choose a decent Norman name most times which is just a clunky solution.
-Regnal names. Why can't you optionally take a regnal name upon ascending to the throne? Monarchs throughout European history did it and it would give us greater flexibility in terms of role playing. If not for kings, at least for emperors.
The mechanics are already in the game for the popes who choose a regnal name upon being elected by the CoC. Sometimes your heir is somebody who's name you can't control like a cousin or kinsman or whatever and it would be good to have some control over them once you die.
-The ability to change your childs name after choosing it. Its not as if they'd care. The grace period to change their name would expire after they hit 12 or 16. Yesterday I mispelled "Ardeshir" as "Ardeshit" and so I was stuck with Shahanshah Saoshyant of the Samanids, Ardeshit, First of His Name. I think regnal names would fix this though.
-On the topic of kids, why can't you control the education and marriage of your landed children? Under seniority and primo you kind of have to land your children or else suffer prestige penalties. In Islam this is amplified by decadence and open succession. So why can we only name our grandchildren if our children are unlanded? Or only choose our child's spouse if they don't have a title? And why can't we control our child's education if they're landed?
I've lost count of the times I've landed my second born only for my chosen heir to die and the inheritance pass to a child who had rowdy and willful but the awful AI randomly chose a stewardship focus and gave him indulgent wastrel. It makes no sense! And then they end up marrying a thirty year old chaste lesbian with slow and clubfoot and then my succession is screwed for decades.
-The ability to choose different nicknames. Monarchs often acquired nicknames through their own propaganda efforts (See Catherine the Great, who was declared as such by her own underlings not just by posterity). So if my monarch qualifies for both "The Just" and "The Unready" I can choose between nicknames after a couple of years or whatever. I would also like to be able to reject nicknames caused by event (for example "The Just" in the stewardship focus event chains) or to remove nicknames if the traits that cause them no longer exist (For example, why should I still have "The Just" if I now have arbitrary, cruel, greedy etc.? It destroys any role playing value this game has.) Maybe a monarch wouldn't willingly choose "The Unready" as his title but it would be fun to be able to choose a nick independent of arbitrary factors like how much piety I have.
I would also like to overwrite nicknames if I qualify for other ones I prefer (this is partially in the game: the Saoshyant nick replaces whatever you already have upon taking the Saoshyant decision). Finally, why no custom nicknames? I want to call my Emperor "The Wrath of God"!
-Custom titles. Considering we have the ability to rename titles we should have the ability to rename titles. Huh? What I mean is renaming the generic "Emperor" or "King" to something else. So your character could be called a "God-Emperor" or a "High King" or whatever you want. My point is, why isn't there more customization in this area? For example, a Bulgarian Emperor is just called Emperor, not Tsar. And western European emperors are just called "Emperor" no matter how large or impressive your empire is. I'd like to have the option to rename my rank to "Caesar" in order to roleplay as a hugely powerful European monarch.
And another thing, when I rename my empire to "British Empire" (in order to make it look rad on the map), there's a weird double redundancy where my title is actually called "Empire of British Empire". But Byzantium is just called the "Byzantine Empire" and same with the HRE. Maybe its hardcoded in but its weird having the double redundancy so it would be very much appreciated if this were fixed.
-Weird translations. Norse names in particular, with their weird lettering, are hard to replicate when naming kids. Why aren't they anglicised? Literally every other culture is. Why is Sweden called Svipjod when you could just name it Svithyod? Russia is called Russia, not Rossiya. Germany is called Germany, not Deutschland. etc. why are northern European countries so localised? Ireland is Eire and Wales is Brythonaid. It just doesn't gel well with everything else.
So this huge block of text is just my two cents. Names might seem trivial but they're important in a roleplaying sense and I think these changes would add a lot to the game if implemented. Thanks for reading!
PS: Great job on the optimization, the game is 100 times more playable.
