Indeed. I'm not too worried about my imaginary CIMs. I must say, I've always been fascinated by people's obsession with grand, sprawling interchanges and highways. Cities designed mainly for cars are god awful for the most part, both from a environmental and a city-planning perspective. European cities crap all over North American ones IMHO.

Agreed. And that is because cities in usa have park(ing) lots while cities in europe have park(s).

Both contain the word park- but they're pretty different and make up for all the difference in environmental health of cities. I live in the greenest european capital city apparently. There cannot be a month, where they haven't closed yet another street and transformed it to pedestrian-only zones.

In USA, i reckon, they're planning every day about how they should extend traffic lanes and/or increase parking lots and garages to comfort the ideal american passenger - the automobile user.

Right you are. Not to derail the thread, but it can be painful watching the city you grow up in slowly turning to concrete. European cities are actually cities, where people are encouraged to go out and be part of a community. Here, community is a pr slogan for shite developers and city planners who have no sense of what it means. Everyone lives in isolation, drives a car - by themselves - back and forth to work or the local sprawlmart, and bitches constantly about commute times. It's essentially a bunch of cities for one. Every new overpass separates everyone further, causes future traffic troubles, and costs a ridiculous amount of money.

Agree with the comments above. I definitely want to plan well, which means providing jobs and services near to residential areas and adequate public transport so car usage is minimised.

Also, skyscrapers are bad no matter which way you look at them.

The Frontage Road junction looks very effective in urban areas [but only with merging lanes :)]

Merging lanes would be great! +1

I already picked my favourite interchanges :)

or this one

I have to test which one works better. They don't look super exciting, but I want to build as effective as possible.

My favourite junction:

320px-AS_Teilkleeblatt_4Ramp_dia.svg.png

The most awesome one is the turbine, but it's kinda hard to build with perfect proportions. :D

240px-AK-Turbine-5Bruecken.svg.png

I spotted the german in this thread ;) yes, those are standard intersections, very common, easy and effective.

Edit: and to say something productive: I would change the up/down pattern from the turbine, to make it easier - one of the highways should be elevated for the whole time, so you only need 2 different layers of height

It can be done with the 3 lane highway in the middle, using 2 lane on way road for frontage road when it as two lane, and ramp for the connexion.

I personnally love thise on, and will try to reproduce it!

28%20SHZ%20Interchange.jpg

Yes, that might be a solution if the capacity is enough. It looks really nice but I won't have room for that later on.. or Simcity 13 just made me claustrophobic.

A bit of Spaghetti Junction can't go amiss in these discussions. Works perfectly if you know where you're going.

The AI will (hopefully) know. :D

I haven't seen any dev respond to any questions about improvements to the traffic system over CiM2. Have I just missed it? The lack of merging lanes definitely stinks!

I used to sort of make my own merging and turning lanes. Unfortunately that only worked well for highways and one way streets by adding and removing lanes. Unfortunately, the AI was not always smart enough to use it properly and it created other bottlenecks. This is something I miss from roads in city builders - the number of lanes for a road is fixed to the same amount in either direction.

Turbineknooppunt.png

nur bedingt...

can't really work that way on a narrow space. Look at the bottom right T-section. While the part to the right is elevated, the part going north must be lower. So you either get an extremely steep road, or an Escher-Picture :) while being basically the same, the one you posted has the better angles for that
