Chapter 10 (October 1943 - February 1944)
Fortress Europe

By October 19 the Soviet Union had reached the Romanian border and the two parties made a separate truce, then the Soviet army moved the bulk of its army towards Memel and East Prussia, hoping to cut off the 300.000 Germans and Hungarians in Leningrad and Finland, the German army was constantly deploying troops in the Finnish front as they thought victory would be easy, but they didnt count on with the massive British, Swedish and Canadian support the Fins were recieving.

The Soviet Counter Offensive continues

In South America most of the Brazilian militia's were deployed already, securing the continent of any further uprising attempt. In Guangxi Clique the British were forcing the retreat of large enemy formations and soon the war would be over.

All the preparations had been made: large deception tactics made Italy and Germany withdraw several divisions from Italy, the 1o Corpo Motorizado (Firs Motorized Corps) was combat ready in Tripoli, numereless extra convoys were in reserve, the time had come to liberate Europe from the Nazi-Fascist tyranny.

The Operation, codenamed Olympus (name intended to make the Italians believe the invasion would be on Greece) was the largest as of yet, the 1o Exército da FEB (First FEB Army) would attack Northern Italy from Tripoli, and the 2o Exército da FEB (Second FEB Army) would attack Southern Italy from Sicily. The plan was subject to change as the invasion proceeded. The two corps that would land in Venice (1o Corpo de Volta Redonda and 1o Corpo de Rio Branco) were in reserve to assist wherever it was most needed during the first stages of the invasion, if all beachheads were secured without their help, they would proceed to Venice. The date chosen was November 26 1943.

Operation Olympus
5-10_zps2a768ad1.png

At 3 A.M on D Day, Four of the five divisions of the 1o Corpo de Três Corações landed on the foot of Italy, while the other division, in Messina, attacked Reggio di Calabria. The enemy was taken completely by surprise, and as they realized what was happening, requested support from the italian units defending Naples and Taranto.

D Day

6-10_zps5c65c653.png

D Day plus 3, the 1o Grupo de Caças (First fighter group) arrive in Sicily and give air support to the brazilian divisions, the italian commander, Graziani, transfer most of his garrisons in Southern Italy to halt the Brazilian advance from Crotone, giving a clear path to the liberation of Taranto.

Brazilian Pilots

By December the Brazilian units in Taranto started pushing north, assaulting several Italian positions in the port of Bari. Meanwhile in Naples the 1o Corpo de Belo Horizonte start their amphibious assault, the axis commanders thought there were going to be one massive attack from the first beachhead, and not several separate landings, which made them transfer the defences from important cities as Naples to hold Bari and other provinces in that area. They were mistaken, Naples was invaded and liberated in D Day + 11 and the italian forces in Bari retreated in fear of being cut off.

The Liberation of Naples

At this point of the Operation three full Corps were deployed in different beachheads, now the job was to link Naples to Taranto, joining those three Corps. With the breakthrough in Bari the Brazilian divisions pushed north until they met German and Bulgarian resistance in Cerignola. The Germans had the high ground, but they were attacked from both of their flanks by infantry with artillery and air support. After three days of fighting they retreated.

As soon as the Italians heard of the Brazilian victory in Cerignola they sent all of their reserve to counter attack Naples. This decision made Italy have no reserves to defend another landing near Rome, which occured in D + 21. The 1o Corpo Motorizado, which contained all of the brazilian tank brigades (equipped with the Cromwell) landed in Rome with minimal resistance, Gaspar Dutra, former commander of the Brazilian army in South America, commanded the Corps. The population greeted the Brazilians with cheers, and Mussolini and his government retreated North. The Italian king capitulated, and another government was formed, one which was pro allies. Sadly most of the Italian military denied such actions and continued to fight against the Brazilians normally.

With the first phase of the Operation being a complete success, the second phase, the invasion of Northern Italy, started. The next day after Rome was liberated the 1o Corpo de Manaus started their amphibious attack.

The FEB in the Naples front was united and continued their attacks to link up with Rome, San Severo was the next line of defense, with 30.000 Bulgarians defending the province. The Italian bombers tried to assist their allies, but the continued interceptions of the Brazilian P-47 of the 1o Grupo de Caças made their job alot harder.

Obviously the war did not end by Christmas, and there was no truce either. The Brazilian divisions continued enlarging their beachheads, and in Naples after three attempts to breakthrough the Italian lines they still held.

Italian Campaign 1 January 1944

The enemy continued deploying several divisions to the southern front, the chance to pocket most of their troops would soon come.

The Northern Front

In January 11 the breakthrough in Naples was finally achieved, the Brazilian soldiers in their fourth attempt got through Monte Cassino. The hill was a strategic location, being able to control the whole sector. The troops from Naples and Rome were finally linked up.

A weakness in the Axis lines was discovered in the province of Rimini. If that region was captured all of the Italian, German, Bulgarian and Hungarian diisions in Central Italy would be pocketed and forced to surrender.

Rimini

The troops in the Northern Sector pushed forward, capturing Genoa and breaking through the Gothic line. In Monte Castello the Brazilian troops, with Air support, force the retreat of a German fallschirmjager regiment after fierce fighting.

The Assault on Rimini was sucesful and the enemy retreated north, but to not let this chance escape, Mascarenhas, which was on his HQ in Rome, ordered a amphibious assault behind the enemy lines.

In January 23 the pocket was closed and the port captured. The enemy tried to breakthrough Rimini and link up with their forces in Venice but the Brazilian armoured counter attack secured the allied lines.

Every hour the Rimini pocket got smaller, the Brazilian tank brigades used the Cromwell's speed to cut off the Italian lines while the Royal Navy kept the Regia Marina from evacuating their forces.

In February 1 the first Brazilian regiments entered Milan, the enemy was outnumbered, outgunned and without supplies, resistance was small and the city was captured in five hours. The Enemy, after the defeat at the close quarters battle of Montese, retreated into the Po Valley.

With the capitulation of the italian forces in the Rimini Pocket and the fall of Milan, the remaining soldiers surrendered in February 5. By the end of the Italian Campaign 7 Brazilian Corps were in Italy, the two reserve Corps were not needed and soon they would take part in a much more difficult Operation.

It is what it is; it´s designed to do exactly that :) Tearing the Axis apart is now a matter of time anyways and you could´ve conquered more territory with bigger army (at least take it away from the Bear).

Btw. Why aren´t you checking on another´s people AARs? Like favor for a favor, eh? :p

IIANM I believe D. Pedro I abdicated the crown of the Kingdom of Portugal in favor of the Brazilian Throne?

Not exactly.

When his father went back to Portugal he stayed in Brazil as a prince of the, at the time, Empire of Brazil Portugal and Algarves. A few years later he proclaimed Brazil independent of Portugal and was King for almost a decade. When his father died in Portugal he was called to assume the throne in Europe and he went leaving his infant son, who later became King, and a regency in Brazil.

Well not exactly ;) and this is OT. If we want to discuss this we have to do it somewhere else.

Taken from the Wiki:

...the Emperor received word that his father had died on 10 March 1826, and that he had succeeded his father on the Portuguese throne as King Dom Pedro IV.[120] Aware that a reunion of Brazil and Portugal would be unacceptable to the people of both nations, he hastily abdicated the crown of Portugal on 2 May[121][122] in favor of his eldest daughter, who became Queen Dona Maria II...

Good, I like the style with lots of pics. Interesting this lend-lease stuff, it makes you able to do much more, wasn't following HOI3 but it seems it makes the minors much more fun to play.
Oh, you should also register the game if you have bought it.

Well im terribly sorry but i cant continue this AAR, i had all the screenshots ready for the final chapter (liberation of france and invasion of germany and japan), but some checksum issues appeared when i was playing another campaign with my brother,so i had to reinstall, and i kinda forget about the screenshots...... So last week when i was going to upload the final chapter i find out that all my screenshots and my saves are gone............

Im really sorry, i was looking forward myself to finishing this AAR since i was having lots of fun with it. Im probably gonna start a brazilian victoria 2 AAR by next month or so.

Νevermind, it was a great AAR! Nice balance between pics and text and the both pics and text were really informative and well presented. For the next time however perhaps you consider not using the spoiler tags :p

Btw, if you deleted your HOI folder, check your Recycle Bin. I know its a trivial thing to do, but most times its the obvious things we forget.
