About those revolts...

Kalmuk and city rebelled the first chance they got, in Aug '40. Then, after Persia joined the war, Kalmuk revolted again, in Jan '41. And then it was just Persia, and then Kerch rebelled in Apr, and then, and then, and then along came Jones... (oops! sorry, wrong song!:p ) Ahem, since the rebel seige there had driven the population under 5k, we sent our army back from the Med to attack Kalmuk, which we cleared by late May, sending settlers to force convert the province. In Jul Kerch revolted again, and for a while after the city fell to them, there were rebellious peasants seiging a rebellious city.

And then, in addition to Persia in the south I was at war with Sweden in the north, and then just Sweden, far away from these revolts (was that good or bad?) Our Georgian allies cleared out and retook Kerch in Feb '42, massacring only enough to bring the pop to 5k exactly. But the province rebelled again in May and yet again in Jun, starving the pop under that critical ceiling:D . We cleared the province by mid Aug, and took a loan to send settlers, using the rest to raise the troops needed in the north. In the meanwhile, however, Crimea had revolted at the start of the month.

Not quite a month after the war was finally over, we traded maps with Georgia (0/116) and asked them to become our vassal, but I had forgotten that they were duty-bound to reject the offer without a plebicit, which couldn't be held while their troops were out of the country. Crimea fell to the rebels just after we heard of a nationalist rebellion at Kerch, in Feb '43. The city's defence would collapse in late Aug, and our troops' rampage through the streets dropped the population to little more than 7k. In other news, we had renewed our royal marriage with Bohemia back on 23 Feb.

By late Oct news of our nation's resiliancy under pressure sank in around Europe, and our Great Reputation was again enhanced. Jean Calvin electrified the Protestant movement in Europe in 1544, but it means nothing to us. We spent the year improving the defences at Ingermanland, seeing as how Sweden seemed enthralled with it in our last war. Kaffa revolts in Feb, while Azow rose up in May and again in Jun. In Aug both the peasants and garrison at Crimea revolted, and by the time order was restored in late Sep '45 the population was down to...

exactly 5000.

That Dec our Infrastructure advanced to Level 3, and all research is directed towards Land Tech. Kerch revolted in Jan '46, and on 4 Aug we renewed our dynastic ties with Georgia. And that takes us through the Boyard regency, as Ivan IV is now coming of age and into his inheritance.

5000 can only be crossed by attrition of population, so next time they rebel, make sure you siege until population is 4997 or something, and they will loose lots when you retake the city, but if you take the city when they have 5001 population they will always only loose 1 citizen, regardless of the size of your looting army...

speaking of BB, how high is yours now?

Currently (late 1579) it's at 41, while the others of note are France 20 (in their own BB War at the moment), Poland 13, and Spain 10. I've been at peace (except for rebellions) for over 4 years, so I must have hit a high of 42 after my last war. And just how long can a city's defensive seige value sit at -4? Memel's dropped to that from +4 in about one year, and has stayed there without surrendering to the rebels for about three.

Meanwhile, back in the tundra...

We all made a big deal of the coronation ceremony for Ivan IV Grozny as the first Tsar of the country. All, that is, except the peasants of Kaffa who rose up in revolt.:( On 4 Feb Georgia agreed to become our vassal:D ; Denmark, however, is becoming a thorn in our side, as they again refuse to renounce their royal marriage with yet another vassal of ours. Igor urges Ivan to make war immediately, claiming that it is obvious that Denmark is out to destroy us, but wiser heads prevailed in the Council of Security.

In 1548 we refounded a trading post at Aralsk. Kaffa again rose up in May, while in Mar Crimea, including the garrison, rebelled. We moved the troops in for a long and tedious seige while clearing space for good, Orthodox settlers. We didn't want to take the city too soon, and so ordered the seige lifted on occasion to tease them into hope, and it would be late Jan '51 before we finally accepted its surrender.

In early '49 Helvetia, which had been conquered, ceded, and ceded again, decided "enough of this" and declared their independence. In Mar I realized I had forgotten about inviting Bohemia into the alliance; fortunately, no other country had thought to beat us to it, and they agreed on the 23rd. (Hey! that's today!) In Apr 1550 we were informed that our Naval Tech had again improved (Level 3), but we're still not sure where it's coming from, not having called for any research on it.

I made a note to watch for Hungary's alliance to expire in about a year, as they would be very useful against Poland, but it soon became pointless. On 15 Aug Austria (with Bavaria, Hungary, Wurtemburg, and Venice) declared war on Bohemia, and our alliance just fell apart. Denmark and Georgia both refused to join this war, and without any way of getting there it was pointless for us, so we declined too, wishing to avoid a BB war we were not ready for. We did send diplomats to all three countries, and they all agreed to overlook this sleight and reform the alliance. It proved to be an interesting war, as Wurt lead the capture of two provinces. Hungary got out early gaining cash, and Venice left with a truce. Austria ended up paying indemnities for peace, and Wurt, which had done the most work, got nothing for its troubles.

On 1 Oct we renewed our royal marriage with Denmark (probably shouldn't have, given my long-range plan). The following Mar revolts broke out in both Azow and Kaffa. We would lose the battle at Azow but the rebels faded into the fields anyway. The rebels at Kaffa began queing up in Jun. Our royal marriage with Helvetia on 23 Sep edged our relations into the positives (+1). Kaffa (this time with the city garrison) rebelled again in Jan '53.

When we gained access to Helvetia's maps on 1 Feb '54 (it took 5 tries) a loan was taken to send out traders, the remainder being used to promote officials. That year saw trade posts founded at Omsk, Semipalatinsk, Madras, Matagorda, and Tampico. Only our attempt at St Martin failed, although our second try there succeeded the next year. We traded maps with the Iroquois on 22 Apr '55, and exactly one month later renewed our dynastic tie with Hungary.

Jan 1556 witnessed Market Fluctuations in Mobile, owned by England. The Holy Roman Empire must be ruled by idiots: they elected Charles Emperor, who didn't want it anymore, and so immediately elected a replacement, Philip. And that completes Ivan's first decade as Tsar. Coming next, the war Morpheus doesn't want to read about.

'TAG = HAB' is Austria if you have to do that as well :)

At least I think it was like this, comments?

I think you also have to delete the target country's listing right at the beginning of the file.

Wow, I am SOOOO far behind in this write-up! I just finished the Times of No Troubles this morning!

Anyhoo, in Jul 1557 Kaffa revolted, followed by Kalmuk in Dec. That Sep we achieved a Land Tech advance, reaching Level 7, and I directed all research into Infrastructure. That advance came just in time, as Igor managed to get Ivan to declare war against.... (envelope please).... Sibir! Bwahahaha! (Diabolical laughter) "So, you thought you could fool us!" (Diabolical acting) That was on 12 Aug, and on 15 Sep their embassy, headed by one calling himself Morpheus, arrived with a desperate offer of a truce. We threw him to the dogs.

On 3 Dec the Poles, who always leave their best troops on our border, declared war upon us with the backing of Naples; our allies Bohemia, Denmark, and Georgia all join in. (oh, Bohemia backed out when we declared against Sibir, but we invited them back because...) The Poles then abandoned our border to attack Bohemia. We feel sorry for using them this way, but after all, they do live a Bohemian lifestyle:D . Sweden joined the fun on New Years Eve, and again our allies answered the call.

Irgiz surrendered on 17 May '58, and Tenghiz on 12 Jun. The Sibirians exhibited the usual brilliant stupidity of military leaders the world over, by abandoning their seige of Alga when they were on the verge of victory, so as to attack us at Tenghiz. In order to remove the threat to our vast and empty center, we offered Poland a truce on 13 Jun, which offer they accepted. Before the end of Aug they had declared against the Teutonic Order, which was aided by Prussia. A poor choice by the Prussians; they were annexed on 17 Oct.

Finland fell on 17 Sep, while in Oct we had a revolt in Azow to deal with (or not, as the case may be). In Feb '59 we were suprised to hear that the English civil war had come early: the Royalists declared independence, holding Midlands and Kent. On the 4th both Savolaks and Kurgan fell. We demanded Savolaks of the Swedes (2 stars/3) but were rebuffed. Of course, on the 21st a Swedish embassy appeared offering us Savolaks for peace (we, of course, accepted with grace).

Sibir managed to recapture Irgiz on 20 Feb (their one and only success in this war). We lost control of Azow to the rebel scum on 2 Apr, but captured Orsk on the 28th. In early May Sibir abandoned all projects to attack us at Orsk, but our army slipped away before they arrived. On 29 Oct we retook Irgiz, and they began an assault upon Orsk. Their assault failed to take the city, and we were able to lift the siege with a quick counterattack on 21 Nov.

Dec saw our Trade Tech advance (hmm, I must have switched to that without noting it down:eek: ) to Level 4, allowing embargoes. With the coming of the new year, Kourbski took command of the seige of Kustanai, but the Danes would insist on taking control of the city when it fell on 24 Feb. And on the last day of the month we formally annexed Sibir. Bwhahahaha!

Of course, now the Danes are getting to be more than annoying. They held on to their royal marriages with first Pskov and now Georgia, delaying our rightful incorporation of these Orthodox minors. They scammed their way into Kouban, and now they pulled rank and took our rightful province of Kustanai! Igor Bushov practically foamed at the mouth with his desire for an immediate invasion, and it took all my efforts to persuade Ivan to agree to my own plan instead. Now that we have the Swedish provinces to which we had historical claim, we should arrange to have them replace Denmark in our alliance before going to war.

planning the demise of denmark

The Dutch declared their independence in Apr 1560 with all but Artois and Luxemburg (at the time I write this [1619], they've expanded into northern France as well as Germany, but have been cut into three parts:eek: ). Later that month we took a loan to force convert the provinces formerly known as Sibir (except Kurgan which is too large to do so and cannot be manipulated into revolt without destroying our stability:mad: ). I also begin putting my plan into action, sending gifts and letters to Stokholm to improve our relations there.

In late Jun I arrange a royal marriage with England, seeking to raise relations high enough to gain access to their maps. The only other event of note that year was a revolt at Kaffa in Aug. In 1561 the Council of Trent instituted the Catholic Reformation, although it would be a few years before the Pope adopts it as his own:confused: . That Mar we founded a colony at Ichim. '62 was another quiet year, starting with one of my agents stealing the royal atlas in Madrid (112 new zones/provinces) and ending with an advance in our Infrastructure Tech (4).

Mar '63 saw Ichim (4k natives) become a city, and the conquistador is sent to explore Transibir. I also arranged dynastic ties with Sweden, moving the plan a step closer to completion. We founded a trade post at Louga that Jul, not that I claim Africa as any part of my goal, but I wanted a rich province somewhere that I could get on the cheap.

Our New Year's gift to Sweden in 1564 was well worth it, raising relations a point per gold spent on it:cool: . Meanwhile, I directed all income to cash, so as to pay off a loan due in the middle of the year (I would switch between cash and Infra like this a few more times, paying off all loans by Jul '68). Exactly one month later, we invite Sweden into our alliance and kick the dirty Danes out. Meanwhile, in western Europe Navarra declared independence from Spain at this time, only to have the government toppled by rebels one month later:eek: . That spring we found trade posts at Irtych and Tchany.

Coming next: Poland's BB war

Poland's BB War

Let's see, where did I leave off.... ah yes.

1565 saw Market Fluctuations in Holland (the Dutch would enjoy it while they held it:eek: ), as well as two conquistadors volunteering their services and a general of note, Vorontinski (5/3/4/-). On 18 Jan Poland (with Naples and Savoy) declared against Hungary (supported by Austria, Bavaria, Venice, and Wurtemburg). When our ally Bohemia declared war against Poland on 15 Feb, we joined Sweden in supporting them, while our vassal Georgia did not. I immediately invited the Georgians back into the fold, getting a free boost to our relations.:D Brandenburg made the hat trick on 3 Apr, joined by Hanse and Hannover, while Savoy abandoned Poland.

On 8 Aug Belgorod surrendered to us, joined on 18 Sep by Poltava. We boldly demanded both provinces (4 stars out of 3) and were promptly refused. The next day they offered Belgorod alone, but even I'm willing to support Igor's desire for two provinces. Kursk fell to assault on New Year's Eve, and we hurridly demanded that and Belgorod before taxes were due, but no such luck. TND, however, Poland offered the same. That ended Russia's part in this war.

Brandenburg settled for a truce on 6 May '66, while Austria paid indemnities that same day. Bavaria demanded cash on 25 Feb '68, and Poland gave in. They would end up paying Wurtemburg on 22 Dec '70, and Bohemia on 11 Jun '71. They also ceded Moldavia to Venice on 23 Dec '70. Finally, on 16 Mar of that year, Poland and Hungary, the two who had started it off, agreed to a truce after more than six years of war.

In other diplomatic news, we entered a royal marriage with Navarra on 2 Sep '66, and renewed our vows with Bohemia on 24 Feb '68. Hanse, joined by Brandenburg and Hannoever, declared against Denmark on 12 Nov '69, and we'd keep a close eye on this war, as it should help us in extracting our vengence on those treacherous Danes. In Feb '70 we trade maps with England, ond on 1 Sep we donate an atlas (exchange 542 for none) to Georgia and, while their jaws have dropped, ask if they'd like us to handle government functions for them. They murmur "yes".:D :D

Meanwhile, we continued to settle Siberia and even add a little to our holdings in India. Trade posts were founded at Novosibirsk and Demianka in '66, at Ob and Ganges in '67, Angara in '70, and Tchuma in early '71. It took three tries, but we upgraded Semipalatinsk to a colony in Mar '69. And in these 6-1/2 years, there was only one revolt, at Crimea in Feb '69.

And that's where I'll leave off for now. Coming next: "Vengence is mine", thus sayeth the author.

Vengence

Ah, yes, on 1 Jul 1571 (am I really this far behind in my write ups? ) I step back and let Igor have his fun, urging Ivan to declare war on the dispicable Danes. We still had a royal marriage with them, but eh. And Bohemia and Sweden both joined in our war effort. I was very pleased in a Machiavellian way to see their army in Kustanai march on Kurgan, hoping that they would seige its population down to size, but then disappointed when they continued on past.

On the 28th they paid Brandenburg to evacuate Copenhagen, forcing Hanse to seige it all over again. On 3 Aug the Polish Posse (Naples and Savoy) declared against us, and again Bohemia and Sweden answered our call (with a yes, that is:D ). By the 5th the cav I had raised at Kola (and left kicking their heels for a few years waiting for this moment) had gallopped through Finmark and Narvik, which were merely colonies. Despite this loss, they offered a mere truce on the last of the month, an offer that was brushed away with the wave of a hand.

On 23 Sep Portugal with the English Royalists declare war; there is no easy access to them, and nothing we'd want besides their trade posts in India (which would be deuced difficult to reach), so I offer a renege on their declaration, which they accept. Kustanai fell to assault on 14 Oct, but the Danes insulted us with another truce offer TND. Polotsk surrendered on the 21st, just after our assault broke off.

Our troops on the steppes were freed up as Kouban surrenders on 4 Mar '72. Smolensk fell that month as well, on the 13th. In early spring we destroy a Polish fleet in the Gulf of Finland in two battles, sinking 1N each time (hey, a naval victory under the conditions I've set myself, no matter how small, is still newsworthy! ). Poland gained a victory as Belgorod surrendereed on 17 May, and I make certain to remind Ivan that Igor is his military advisor:D .

On 1 Jun at Far Karelia we wipe out the Danish army returning from Sibir and demand Kouban and Kustanai (4 stars/3), while they counter-offer just Kustanai (which would leave them with Kouban and us without a CB). We recapture Belgorod on 29 Sep, while Mozyr surrenders on 12 Jan '73. I demand Polotsk and Smolensk, to which the Poles agree. I also remind Ivan that, since our diplomats are my responsibility, I'd take the blame for any peace deals that involve our loss:D .

In late Mar Denmark reenters Narvik, and again I lay the blame at Igor's feet, and in May our Naval Tech improved. On 13 May a joint Swedish/Hanse seige of Skane succeeded, but Hanse were in command. However, the Danes agreed that day to pay off Sweden to get them out of the war. Then on the 21st the Teutonic Order declared war, and our allies again joined in. The fools were building ships in all three provinces, so they won't be able to reinforce their army for quite some time. I tried to consilidate our war efforts by demanding just Kouban, but even this offer is rejected.

On 1 Jul Denmark ceded Skane and Jylland to Hanse, and on 8 Sep Poland, now with Parma added to their alliance, joined our war on the Teutons (though they would settle for a truce on 26 Dec). The Danes reached Finmark on 5 Oct, again Igor's fault, although he regained his standing when Livonia surrendered on 9 Nov. TND Denmark repeated its offer, and even when Jamtland surrendered on the 28th they repeated the rejection of our demand of Kouban/Kustanai. We did, however, wipe out their army on 19 Dec. On New Years Eve, after twice defeating their army and capturing their capital, the Teutons offered an insulting truce. TND the Danes saved my skin by rejecting the demand for just Kustanai (a scribe had failed to include Kouban in my demand:rolleyes: ).

In late Apr, despite our poor naval tech and half maintenance, we defeat the combined fleets of Denmark and the Teutons in the Gulf of Finland, repeating the deed in early May. Elsewhere in May Sardinia declared their independence from Spain, and our colony at Semipalatinsk (1k natives) became a city. Kurland fell on 13 Jun, and TND we rejected two peace offers, one for Kustanai and one for Kurland. Sweden, however, got full indemnities from the Teutons on the 24th.

When Ostlandet fell on 14 Aug, the Danes finally agreed to my demand of both Kustanai and Kouban. I took out a loan to pay for settlers and the promotion of officials in these new provinces. In Feb '75 we founded a trade post at Saian. And finally, on 20 Mar, Memel surrendered and we gained another 17N in the annexation.

Now to get back to playing my latest BB war:rolleyes:

With the coming of peace, of course, there was the inevitable and uneviable coming of revolts. As Memel was the last to fall, it was the first to revolt, in Nov 1575, adding more in Jul '77, after which they just died out in the winter of 1580. Sochi revolted in Jun '76, Georgia in Apr '77 and again in Mar '79, and Kouban in Dec '77. Meanwhile, I took advantage of Ivan's diplomatic grandeur to forge dynastic ties to Sardinia (Nov '75), Netherlands (Jan '76), renewed with Helvetica (Sep '76), added Portugal (Feb '78), renewed Hungary (May '80), and added Sicily [independent Jun '78] (Jun '80). In Feb '79 we traded maps with Portugal, which amazingly improved our relations [+1 > +6, something I've never seen happen before:confused: ]. And members of the English Muscovy Company invested 1000 gold in our navy in May '77.

We continued our colonial expansion into TransSibir, founding trade posts at Kranoyarsk, Zima, Touva, Tannu Ola, Irkutsk, Selenga, and Buriat in Ivan's final years. Angara was upgraded to a colony in Apr '77, becoming a city five years later. In the west, France cried uncle on Christmas Eve '80 in its war against the Iberians, ceding Gascogne, Languedoc, and Roussillon to Spain.

Our envoy at Buda spent the final days of Feb '81 and begining of Mar pacing back and forth, waiting for the Austrian alliance to end, desperately hoping none of its members would start a war in its final days. The Russian capacity for patience paid off this time, as we stole the Hungarians from this alliance on the day it expired, 2 Mar. This move made victory in any future Polish war all but certain.

Back to revolts, Memel renewed the cycle in Jul '80, followed by Sochi that Dec and Kouban and its garrison a year after that. Memel fell to the rebels after 14 months after which they marched into the firing lines waiting for them at Kurland. Our army then marched in, retaking the city in late Jun '82, dropping the population to an even 5k. 1583 was another busy year, as Kouban rose in Jan, Sochi in Feb, and Kurland in Aug. There were even false reports of another revolt at Kouban in Jun.

And that was the last year of our beloved Tsar's life, leaving a glorious inheritance to his idiot son Fedor.
