If you look in Slovakia, a province HAS been renamed - 'Jablunkov Pass' (?) to Kosice. Leads me to hope names (though almost certainly not borders) CAN be changed at alpha stage.

Huh? Watch more closely... It's there, there are Russian troops on it. You can see the -ov in the end. It's Lvov now, since Paradox uses English names whenever possible.
Well, using a Russian name for a Polish city prior to 1945 is a bit of an anachronism (the name Lemberg would be much better since the town at least belonged to Austria-Hungary and bore that name in English, while the name Lvov became popular in English only durring and after WWII).

But anyway, I noticed that the Paradox actually corrects the map! Just take a look at the western edge of the latest screenie and compare it with the first one. Keep up the good work, lads!
Cheers

So Göteborg will be Gothenburg now, and Praha will be Prague? A shame really, I liked the use of the native names in HoI 1.

in HOI u have several map 'layers' ... maybe this is just one of them and not a single monocolor map view
Uhm, you mean mapviews? I am well aware of this Paradox-game feature ;) (even though I admittedly don't have HOI I). The others are almost certainly political borders, relations and revolt/partisan risk (if that gun really is revoltrisk), which are with 100% certainty monocolor, the others I don't know of course (some economic, most likely) - the tank model won't fit to any of them, I am afraid (though they look good on their own). The ships from the channel screenie look good though (or are they just placeholders from HOI I?).

Uhm, Latvian doesn't use cyrillic letters. The proper Latvian spelling of Daugavpils is Daugavpils.

Or do I misunderstand you?

What the correct spelling of a city is in Latvian makes very little difference since, as said many times in this thread, English names are used throughout the game. Might be some of those names get names which look weird since they are translated from Russian cyrillic maps, but since that is the way it's commonly written in English then that's what is used.

One might say we shouldn't get mixed up with the cyrillic letters since Latvians don't and didn't use them. But at the time most maps of former Russian Empire were of Russian origin, so the names used in English maps used translations from cyrillic.

It's a matter of taste really :) I suppose you please the largest amount of people if you just use the English names, rather than using some native and some English as in HoI 1, and using only the native names would probably cause a lot of confusing due to cyrillic/chinese/japanese letters.

Not a major issue really, I guess I just like to debate things ad nauseum :p

Stick to english language please.

Isn't HOI translated into german and some other languages also? Ofcourse everyone would like to have the game translate to their language but it happens to cost money.

AFAIK CORE mod was translated to spanish and other languages. Dunno if it was or is possible to completely translate a game by just modders but most textfiles certainly can be translated.

Textfiles: yes... And Paradox has always released French, German & Spanish versions as well.

However, the names on the map are HARDCODED. You can't really expect Pdox to make X versions of that.

This begs the question: in multi-language areas, which english translation will be used? I think that will still be the sticking point which will prompt all the "province x has the wrong name" complaints. :)

It's great because if the rifle-percentage is proportional to local loss in IC,
resources, etc. then a high rifle-percentage will tie up occupant divisions if
they are designed to lower the rifle-percentage. And that would be historical.

That would also remove an AI-problem, since you might suddenly meet them while raiding with light tanks behind their front. it's harder to exploit a slow AI, when they are placing division here and there behind the front.

Actually, I think the map is in a normal bitmap file (only what's displayed, though). There are already editors for Vicky and CK, I think (they can't change the actual province borders, of course.).
