For people who missed today's stream, 9th ethos trolling from Wiz and Cknoor. Hivemind related maybe?

Untitled.jpg

EDIT:

I typed down what they said on the stream into text to post here:

Wiz: ''Someone is asking about some fourth ethos on the factions screen.''
Wiz: ''aahhee I see 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9, I don't see four.''
Cknoor: ''No thats..''
Wiz: ''Oh! Yeah, the fourth one is Xenophile.''
Cknoor: ''Yeah yeah thats so thats the so my ööööh.. Thats mostly your right yeah yeah (untellable).''
Wiz: ''Yeah its..''
(Trolling ignorance continues)

And at the end of trolling:
Wiz: ''
its a good thing they were asking about xenophile and defintely not any other ethos.''

From the Paradox website:

"Advanced Governments: Adopt unique civics and authorities for your government. Play as a Fanatic Purifier and shun all diplomacy, become a Hive Mind to avoid political strife or create a multi-species empire born of Syncretic Evolution."

It seems like Hive Minds will be an authority alongside other former AI personalities.

If that is the case, I doubt it would be worthy of its own "Ethos". Personally, I think the 9th icon might be related to sectors instead.

I can imagine it being a single ethos, connected to the three accension paths. It feels like a logical extension. Biological, synthetic and psionic could all potentially become hivemindish if you think about it. But its just all speculation. I doubt its about sectors as you say, if it was Cknoor and Wiz wouldn't have been so trollish when the stream chat asked about it.

EDIT: Also think from a layout and design perspective why would you put anything else than ethoses on that line with a icon also similiar?

The Paradox website confirms that Hive Mind is an authority, though, alongside at least two others. Why would Hive Mind get its own ethos but not Fanatic Purifiers and Syncretic Evolution?

We both know that Wiz is a master of tease. It's totally something he would do. Besides, it's visually similar to other symbols related to sectors.

If they put hivemind in as an ethos, they'd have to have an opposing ethos because each ethos ingame has an opposing ethos. Not sure what that would be, not-hivemind?

You don't have to do something just because it's been done that way before. Handling it as an ethos is a good shortcut for the game, every other ethos in the game is it's opposite. No reason adding something new for symmetry's sake.

Ahh, so my Wild Speculation in the DevDiary wasn't so wild afterall. That 9th icon will probably be an Ascension/Advanced ethic, which shows how much your pops want to/have already Ascended. As far as I know you can only choose 1 Ascension path per playthrough, so it is plausible. Also notice the similarity between that icon and the Ascension Perks selection menu in a previous DevDiary:

They are both hexagons, sure. But civics are also hexagons, and sectors are represented by hexagons as well.

Relating this icon to ascension paths because Ascension Perk icons are hexagonal is a bit of a stretch.

The shapes by themselves yes, bit of a stretch, but my main point is that it's not unthinkable that the Ascended parts of the population differ from the rest by virtue of being, well, Ascended and having different concerns and worldviews than everyone else.

I expect it would be Hivemind. After all, it resembles the cell walls of a typical hive, but that's the joy of hexagons.

Since pops in a hivemind are all part of the same consciousness, it doesn't necessarily make sense for individual pops in a hivemind to have differing ethics. Therefore, it would make sense if the icon represented pops that are part of a hivemind - also, as pointed out upthread, the honeycomb structure of the icon makes sense as a visual shorthand for "hive".

The hiveminds themselves could still have ethics, but they would be determined on a per-species (or per-hive) level. All pops in a given hivemind would have the same happiness value dependent on the hivemind's relationship with the empire the pops are controlled by, as well as the hivemind's general happiness level (as far as happiness for hivemind pops controlled by their own hivemind's empire goes, the pops obviously wouldn't revolt, but just because it's a collective consciousness doesn't mean it can't be well or unwell).

Hivemind isn't an ethical point of view. It's something biological, so it can't be it.

If I had to guess, it represents three solar systems or three sectors, with a bolded one. And that represents the "Regionalism" ethic, which if it takes hold, will get pops to demand autonomy or independence, regardless of the other ethics they have.
