91 flags on a ship

I first thought that its number were 23, which according to the list was the britsh. Therefore, I thought it was wrong. Thought it wasn't, everyone can see that 23 is GB...

British Naval Jack for #1? It's looks more like the French Royal Standard (argent, a semé-de-lys or)--but given the date of the picture, that wouldn't make sense. By 1795, the Thermidorian Reaction had already taken hold, and the Tricolore was used by all French navy and army.

Also, #50 looks like the port of Calais, and isn't #67 Oldenburg?

1) Says US naval Jack! These 1) 15) & 64) are the only ones identified by the book itself, all as US naval jacks (15 stars)
Makes sense to put a US flag on top on ever mast on a US ship.

67) Could well be - but where is Sweden then? I think its just miscoloring of the image (painting) over time!?

1 looks more like a ancient french flag to me...

Thought, It's a little weird if the US naval Jack shows up several times...


As to 67, is it like Sweden has to be there?

As to 85: Since nr. 8 probably is croatian, then it's probably Brabant's. It's also NOT Bremen's, 88 is Bremen's flag.

53 - could be both Ragusian or Hungarian.

Very similar to this one don't you think ?

It would fit with the date as well (reign of D. Maria & D. João 1777-1816)

76 looks suspiciously much as the Austrian flag.

Also, 40 reminds me of some American flag... a state or something... somewhere south...

If anyone would like to know that ship is the USS Constitution "Old Ironsides", a 44 gun frigate The ship was decorated with all the flags of the nations it visited on its world tour in the mid-18th century.
