60 years old heir dies when ruler is 80

I find this is the situation most likely to have your ruler die without a heir, which is weird since if your ruler lived to his 80s, he probably had quite some grandsons. However, the game does not seem to model that. If your 60 year old heir dies, either you immediately get another 60 year old heir, or you will get a few years without any heir...

And in this case, even if you are Muslim + Iqta (so you have +200% heir chance) you can still end up without a heir.

I really wish they'd let you see a family tree... or even just a succession line. It seems really odd to me that after your direct heir, your descendants are a total mystery.

The game keeps track of it in some limited fashion (I think) since sometimes your ruler dies with a 13yr old heir, and after regency your next heir is like 9.

It'd be nice if it was visible and 'better' tho

That there is no heir isn't so strange - the ruler and his brother just didn't have children. What is jarring is that in the next few years a 0 years old heir will probably appear. Clearly the king assumed his heirless brother would succeed and just didn't get around to it, but has no problems doing it on demand.

My country had this guy. He was a cardinal, died at 68. No close family members left.

But... I'm still surprised that this still happened to my Muslim Iqta, which has like 200% more (that is, 300% of) the heir chance of Portugal...
Although this could be explained by observer bias, I'd like to make sure it's not a mechanism flaw first

Yes but the problem with EU4 is that your heir seems to never have had any children, which is BS

Well, dynasties dying out usually happens exactly like this - no kids and aged monarchs dying. Maybe the 60 year old heir had a son - who died before him.

I don't think it really keeps track of it at all. When one heir dies as a result of a bad RNG roll, another RNG roll happens based on your chance-of-heir (and factors like previous heir age and current king age -- you'll never end up with an heir older than the previous heir or older than you under normal circumstances) and either an heir pops up or it doesn't. There's no "hidden" tree to speak of.

Indeed, there isn't. All about prayers to the RNG God. Given you can't really interact with it, there isn't really use for a tree either I would say.

Daily reminder Louis XIV of France outlived his son and his grandson, before dying, and letting the throne to his 4 years old grand-grandson.
If the succession laws are not well defined in a country, it is very possible that nobody could agree on who was supposed to take the place of a recently dead heir: the son which the king's daughter had with a foreign king and who is now the king of another nation (PU) or the really young son of the dead heir (resulting in a regency) are mere possibilities.
