I've noticed in WWW videos that UK and JP got their 5th research slot ahead of germany.

Germany's 5th research slot is hidden deep under rockets.

I would suggest to move it higher up the ladder and also for allies put the extra research slot in the branches of the tree which require high world tension to develop. I believe this will make the game somewhat more historical and balanced.

What do you mean 'more historical and balanced'?

We cant really know if the game is 'balanced' because none of us have played it before. Paradox has QA's who have tested the game for hundreds of hours (I think Da9el has around 1700 hours) so I think we should trust them on this.

More historical in the sense that allies kicked really in once world tension was high.

The UK and Japan need to research more technologies then Germany. They both need strong navies to survive which Germany can almost completely ignore, and still both require strong industry, army and air forces just as Germany does. At least for me that is the reason they get a fifth slot much earlier then Germany.

No one can get a sixth slot. The USSR tree has two extra slots but they are mutually exclusive.

The first one to bring them up to four maybe. The second one to bring them up to five will take a lot lot longer if not be virtually impossible for most minors.

Uk and Jp already have a great navy to start with.

Anyways, it is all about balance, maybe it will be more fun to play it like this. However it looks a bit off, considering that in previous games and historically Germany has had pretty good researchers.

You seem to forget that nations start with different amount of research slots. The UK and Japan might get their extra slots earlier, but they also start with one less than germany for example. Balancing is of course still going on, so the numbers they start with might have changed since the rather outdated World War Wednesday multiplayer streams, which were done on an months old built.

Right now they did not, UK had 5th slot in 36 already in WWW. Japan early in 37.
that completly depends on what you are focusing on of course. If you straight up go for the extra research slots (which is probably a good idea) then you get it earlier of course. Germany more than any other nation has to prepare for war earlier of course, so they tend to go for the industrial effort but also the anschluss branch etc of course. The UK can basicly hide behind their navy and airforce for quiet a while, before germany becomes a direct threat to them.

So basically they are even in a better position 5 research slots and no need to build up for early war.

they have to focus on alot more things than germany since they have an stretched out empire to manage. Germany can basicly compeltly abandon the navy and just do submarines as they historically did and would be fine. The UK has to focus on the airforce and navy and also of course the empire itself in order to keep up. Germany, once they won on the eastern front can drasticly outproduce the UK in basicly anything. If the soviet union falls, the UK is in huge trouble. Especially if the suez and Gibraltar straits are blocked off and maybe even some of the RN is trapped in the mediteranian because of that, they have massive problems supporting the pacific colonies and protecting the convoys comming in from there aswell.

The UK have a large navy to start with which is not the same as a great navy, Japan have a good navy but both need new ships. Just as an example there are I think 13 technologies involved in Carriers, 4 for the actual Carriers and 9 for the planes. Now both the UK and Japan will start with some of the technologies researched but that is going to be 8-9 technologies that they will probably want to research that Germany can ignore completely. They are also going to be researching and building new escorts (DD and CL) to try and keep vital supply lines open that is less of a priority for Germany.

It is a bit different to HoI3 where Germany had far superior research capabilities then both the UK and Japan, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. The US extra research slot looks like it might take a while to unlock as well. Without playing the game and seeing each major nations unique starting positions and trees it's impossible to tell if any of this is actually a problem.

Correct. The USA and Germany get their extra slots later because they have an much greater industrial potential. Germany by conquering and the USA by gearing up for war. Numbers are far from being balanced of course, but atleast in WWW (MP) germany had more factories after the soviet surrender than the UK and USA combined and that with an completly handicapped soviet union which was incapable of building much if any additional factories due to the trotsky plot which triggered day1, lowering their construction speed by -40%.

I was under the impression all majors start with the same amount of research slots (four, was it?) and minors with one less.

As far as I know all majors start with 4 slots and all minors start with 3 slots. Everyone can get a maximum of 5 slots.

There are also national focuses that reduce research cost for some technologies, UK have one for radar.

I would suggest to move it higher up the ladder and also for allies put the extra research slot in the branches of the tree which require high world tension to develop. I believe this will make the game somewhat more historical and balanced.

While this would make it more balanced, technologically the UK was at least on par with Germany, and arguably ahead (if you look at the level of research achieved across the range of possible fields) even before world tension took off. That said, it does seem a bit odd if Germany can't get their extra slot at about the same time the UK does - both were technologically very strong during the period, punching well above their weight. We'll see how it all plays out - research is heavily abstracted, so it's hard to say from what we've seen whether it's plausible/balanced or not.

I think that research need to more effective if more money is spent for it (for example lab equipments, salaries, necessery materials etc.) Just compare US spendings with Japanese. Money need to be one of important factors. Without money there's no research.
