Just finished my second playthrough with some modified rules to help me with immersion. Rules I used were:
  • For every 'Mechwarrior that I fired, I had to scrap their 'Mech or a kitted-out one of equivalent tonnage and sell any leftover equipment from that 'Mech
  • Each 'Mechwarrior I hired was immediately placed in a 'Mech from storage, that was their personal 'Mech and no one else was allowed to pilot it except in one case (listed below)
  • If a 'Mech was salvaged, whoever landed the killing blow got to pilot that 'Mech unless it was lighter than their current ride. When a 'Mechwarrior got a new 'Mech, they could hand off their former 'Mech to a comrade.
  • Every time a campaign mission was available, it was accepted immediately and no time was wasted in getting it done
Following these rules added an element of difficulty that I did not have in my first playthrough. Being unable to farm constricted resources to a degree. Following these rules, I finished the campaign in a total of 586 days (about 1 year, 7 months, and 1 week), which seems an adequate amount of time for a war to finish.

Now I am curios, though - how many days did it take you all to finish the campaign? Did you beat it sooner than me? Later? I might be interested in doing a speed run in the future and seeing if I could complete the main campaign in less than 365 days (if that is even possible, what with necessary travel time and all).

*edit* minor grammar corrections for clarity

You have played through the campaign twice already? Holy sh!t!

Do you sleep or stop to eat?

Wish I had that kind of free time (aka jealous).

Congrats! Your self-imposed restrictions add a lot of flavor to the game. I wouldn't attempt it myself, but cool to hear what others are doing.

967 days but I played a lot of side missions along the way. I had a lance of Orion by the end and at least 1 non-Campaign assault mech. I was doing 5 skull content while the campaign was still 3 skull. I found that the priority missions tended to be underrated (in difficulty) after the first few so I purposely delayed some of them.

Edit: that and I lost two pilots in a single mission. The first one was an instant loss. Fresh mech cockpit punched by a Dragon. It was one of those Battletech moments that pushed me back a skull in content because of the pilot skill loss. I tried my best to do Iron Man only.

I finished my campaign in 606 days. I did take one or two detours, but with travel times and all, you would basically have to only do the missions on the current planet you're at for the campaign, and the target site to get much shorter than that.

I had a very, very slow last two weeks at work. Fortunate timing, as things are really picking up now and my free time at work is quickly disappearing...

I imagine it will disappear even faster when my wife and I have a kid or two, right now it is just us and our greyhound ;)
I've had a busy month at work, and well the forum has been at least as busy for even longer. :D Im getting 'adequate' playtime, but I'll have more extra time soon enough.
Adequate playtime is hardly adequate for this game. :)

Think I am around week 111 and I promise I will not finish the campaign until I got a full Assault lance... Taking as much as time as I can get until I have done it and get bored.

Now I feel bad that I am on my 3rd playthrough. LOL

First play through after the 3rd or 4th story mission I was all over Brinton and had 3 Banshee (90T) and a BattleMaster lance. Game became far to easy. LOL

I guess I should have upgraded the Argos engines as a priority, every story mission is a 20+ day road trip.
I am still on my first playthough (day 285, just completed defense: panzyr) but I will definitely be using some of your rules next run, although I have fired a pilot yet (I always keep em on the payroll, just in case). Probably not the Killing-blow rule, otherwise Dekker would be running around in the heaviest mechs instead of the lightest. I am also going to stick to stock mechs, the mechlab has made things a little to easy (Highlander with Gauss + 2xPPC, Griffin (SRMs), Wolverine (SRMs), and Centurion with 2xLRM20); occasionally replacing Griffin with Awesome).
For now I just need to get the game running again.
