-5 Stab hit for breaking truce, except I don't have a truce with the country

Title says it all

Why am I getting a stab hit for attacking them because the game says I'm "breaking truce", but I don't have a truce? I had an alliance with them, but now I don't and I did recently defend them in a war but now I don't.

This is severely hampering my ability to play this game, since my largest ally already "coincidentally" allies with all the countries I around me that I want to absorb.

Did you by any chance lift a guarantee on them ?

Also keep in mind that certain diplomatic relations now refresh on the monthly ticks. I.e. if a truce expires on 5 Jan then the game won't recognize the expiration until Feb 1. I've gotten burned by something similar by declaring war on a pagan immediately upon discovery instead of waiting to be awarded the CB. My fault by clicking according to motor memory rather than reading the screens.

This is most likely the answer.

Lifting guarantees is not visually added to the active truce list.
