1492-15something Explored lots of things and built some other things
1506 Invaded Morocco
1550 range of colonies in North America, South America, Africa, India, South East Asia and a stream of trading posts across Siberia.

Late 16th century: New world armies raised for acquisition of Inca, Sibir and Mughal lands. Algeria and Tunisia already conquered.

Early 17th century. Battle commences with Incas. Midway through, Portugal inherits Netherlands. Spain, France, Persia, Mughal Empire and Sibir declare war. Mughal Empire and Spain regret the move while the rest of the smug bastards walk away with nothing. Preparations made for the return match.

Mid 1650 everything in the world is discovered.

Mid 1730 Twelve world wars later and the world is now divided, a little unevenly it might be admitted, between Portugal and it's own play-things (Spain, France and England). We initiate a 6-yearly world war but always select the referees so we win each one. The last minor country, the Iroquois, decides not to field a team for most of these wars but when they do they are beaten in the qualifying round. A surprise entry from Pskov catches a few commentators unaware but it turns out later that they were only able to field a local pub side. Even so, by placing all of there team in defense behind a very large wall (tactics that the Portuguese developed) they were clearly looking for a 0-0 draw and to progress to the next round on goal difference.

It depends which competition you are talking off. Some 20 years ago I guess it was the guy who trounced the turks in that epic final encounter. 12-0 to Portugal. Earlier it was probably de Sousa or Casparacao who led the team to great victories against the Poles and then the Russians in quick succession.

Biggest win was 28-0 against Persia although the 22-0 win against China came a close second with the large squad that they had.

The difficulty is that with no great individual its just a great team game but noone wants to claim the prize. Too modest by half :D

"total football" at its finest. so did you have many problems with fan hooliganism, a la the english or dutch?

The worst hooliganism I have is in Russia and parts of South East Europe. It was something of which I was not at all tolerant. Often they'd try to break into the ground so for the most part I left them to do that. A lot of the time they failed to do this and just dispersed but sometimes they got in so I sent in a large group of rival supporters to get them out.

After a while they got so tired and there were so few left that I embarked on a "Friendly football" program and wherever I tried this the problem went away afterwards. Still some problems in parts of Russia and Greece but for the most part its gone.

The Dutch problem really only sparked up in the early days of the competition but often the visiting French, Polish and German fans outnumbered them so much that it died down without too much trouble.

Anyway, must dash. I've decided to reduce the number of competitors to two in the next competition but the Spanish are showing a little too much resistence for my liking and have barricaded themselves into some huge stadia in the caribbean that I can break into.

1760 and the Spanish and French have been barred from all future competition. The reason for this was given as their refusal to allow travelling Portuguese fans from Italy and the Balkans into the ground for a friendly match but if the truth be known, Portuguese FIFA officials had decided that both the Spanish and French were doing little to spread the game to other party of the world, prefering rather to sit on a few souvenir stores in the Amazon or in coastal regions of Africa.

France offered little resistance. In fact, their main efforts to defend their interests against the might of Portuguese FIFA officials was to start actively to develop the game in parts of North America. However, by this time it was too late and all grounds in France had been occupied. The Portuguese had expended too much to back down at this time and the French team was incorporated into the Portuguese 4th XI.

Spain did prove to be a little more trouble. Indeed, large groups of travelling supporters tried to occupy some of Spains 40-odd super stadiums. Sometimes, this process would take years before they had control of all the key points (bar, burger-stands, changing rooms and the pitch). The Spanish offered to back down in return for a handing over a few training facilities in Mexico and South America but the supporters had been roused and the Spanish team was incorporated into the Portuguese Empires 2nd division (Western Europe) league.

In fact, the length of the dispute with Spain even had fans in Peru, Chile, Mexico, China and India revolting. Don't anticipate the same trouble when I finally decide to scrap the sessennial fixture with England.

Actually, the point of this little game is two fold

a) to complete one game
b) to attempt to colonise the world.

Now, barring a monumental crash, I should succeed in a). I will not achieve objective b) since even now I'm only up to 490 cities out of 830 odd territories. With a bit of luck I may push that figure over the 600 mark by 1792 and then I may rest a bit before embarking on a "colonise-world-from-start" campaign which I think has it's best chance with Spain. One of my problems with this one was that I originally started it out as a make Portugal strong and rich and only when the conquer world option start to become realistic, did I have look at colonising the lot. Knowing a bit about the colonisation game now, I think that, with a good start, the objective of 830 is a possibility.

Anyway, I post the final results once I've finished. If England can pull out their finger and start colonising again there will be a few wars to deal with yet - otherwise just the one. I'm even paying them to do this for me since they're just allowing their colonists to rot away at the moment. So depending on the number of wars, I'd say it should be done by the end of the month.

Well it's almost finished now. Actually it crashed in the middle of December 1792 :D but I'd already saved it a few seconds before so no harm done. The final result is all but known now and I missed my little objective of 600 cities managing to finish with a paltry 599 :D

I'll run a brief summary of the finishing position, primarily on the colonisation front, to show by region cities that were

a) in existence at start of game
b) built by other
c) built by me

Simply due to lack of a comprehensive memory, I'll treaty those colonies that I stole and then built as mine except if it is so obvious (Level 6 colony taken and left until it grows to city).

I'll also show unfinished colonies, trade posts and empty provinces for completeness.

Hopefully I will give a few tips for trying to reach the ultimate target of a city in every (about 830) province.
