Hi

I just wonder if Cities: Skylines will support 4k resolution (or even 5k since monitors with that are coming out) and the 21:9 format?
I got a brand new Dell U3415W and I want to be able to play Cities: Skylines in the monitors native resolution, will it be possible?
I asked @Cities_PDX on Twitter but got no reply :(

I guess if a computer has the power to run a game on such high resolution, it should be fine.

The main issue relies on the user interface, as it will look fairly small and hard to use (unless the screen is above 30', but even then you would have to be farther from the screen to easily see all of it). The UI would have to have different scales, but if it does, it should be fine. 4K is just another resolution at the end of the day!

P.S: I just googled your screen. I think because the ratio is so wide, the UI may actually be safe. Although the field of view may be wierd, so I think it's more of making the game work properly for that aspect ratio than anything else.

I would rather run the game at full screen in the monitors native resolution.

4K users is, well, a staggering small amount of people. The cost of making the game support that natively, and not using a "fusklösning", would most likely never be worth it.

I thought any respectable engine could work, theoretically on any resolution.
In my understanding, this is not a matter of hard coding, its just a bunch of arbitrary numbers.

Take Unreal engine, for example. I can run a game from 1998 on 1920x1080 fine.

It's a matter of scaling the UI nicely, though, which would require it to be redone AFAIK.

Yeah, indeed. The UI is almost unreadable in the game I mentioned.

But what about having the resolution option in videos settings?

I mean, I dont have a 4k monitor but it is pretty obvious what would make me more mad between having the option to play the game on the native resolution with minuscule UI, or not having a option at all. :p

1440p that usually comes when you go 27" is quite well adopted already (still small compared to the the whole pack of gamers) but anything higher than that is luxury and thus not offered today by all or maybe even most games.

CiM2 tops at 1440p. Is it the same for Skylines, TotalyMoo?

Considering 4K monitors have dropped at least to half in price every year and are almost as cheap as a good full HD monitor... are you sure that will be true also in two years time?

Or is the Paradox plan perhaps to just like CiM2 abandon the game within a few months after release and not aim for a longer life-cycle and support? Because that would certainly explain such thinking and decisions to focus only on what is in use right now and ignore what is the certain future.

I have an iMac 5k.
What will the highest resolution be?

Moo will correct me if I am wrong but usually when games don't support a certain resolution , when you run the game it will automatically change the resolution to 1080p (supported resolution) .

Hard to tell...but you sound bitter about something. Stop assuming what you "certainly" think they are doing. I for one have no plans to upgrade my monitor to 4k so it's not an issue for me.

It's a matter of scaling the UI nicely, though, which would require it to be redone AFAIK.

That is the key, although the windows scaling features are getting better, windows scaling seems to work in some games just fine. Although most games have a tiny UI that is very tiny, but clearly visible if you get close enough.

1440p that usually comes when you go 27" is quite well adopted already (still small compared to the the whole pack of gamers) but anything higher than that is luxury and thus not offered today by all or maybe even most games.

CIM2 support 4k just fine for me. Not sure where you got your info.

They are cheap right now. I just bought a 39" 4K 30Hz for under $300 for my father.

No, we plan to support this game for a long time, but that has nothing to do with not putting effort into 4K support right now. You speak as a privileged Swede (I'm with you there) but for the majority of our fans this is not an affordable luxury, nor will they have hardware strong enough to utilize 4K.

The amount of people that can both buy such a screen and have the computer to back it up is staggeringly low. Sure, in a few years they will be more, and then we might consider adding it. But that does not make it sensible, in any way or form, to spend development resources today to do this.

But with that argument you shouldn't support Mac either?
Since prices are falling on 4K monitors now perhaps it's time to take a new look into support 4K for all currently supported Paradox games?
