I love this AAR. No matter how similar every war with Burgundy is, you manage to find a new and interesting way of telling it. Awesome!

Kudos on the 1000th post (WOW!). I was wondering why you didn't ask for Othe or Vermandois so as to cut off Burgundy's capital from the sea - thereby eliminating their ability to further colonize? Part of a plan or role playing?

You have reduced Burgundy to a vassal in waiting and can start the same process on the French.

Congratulations on 1000 replies.
You know, I should do that with France and wish I could say I did. But as I look over my notes, it appears I was obsessed over Burgundy. They really must have done me wrong. ;)

Thank you so much for that compliment. I have feared that this constant war would be repetitious and boring. That you find it otherwise is a great boon.

Funny you should say that because I did try and add a little of the modern politics into his reign. Perhaps he was and that is what killed him. Heh.

You know, as I think back on that, I think my thinking was that I was not yet ready to deal with France again, wanting to beat further on Burgundy. I did not want to add too many fronts for the French as well as rounding out those borders a bit more. You have to admit, the addition of Luxemburg does make that "corridor" section much prettier. ;)

Thanks GW. And I thought it fitting to mention. Burgundy had done quite a nice job until I interfered. As for colony capture - it depends on how large it is. If not yet a full city, you can simply steal it, though it will then no longer count towards war score. IIRC, they had built all their's to at least cities so if not fortified, I could just walk in a control it. Otherwise, ye olde siege took place.

Indeed, we will. I won't be resting on my laurels as far as war goes as we finish out, that is for sure.

To all - thanks on the congrats for reaching 1,000 posts. I think only Into the West reached such heights. But to me, the number of posts truly means I just have a long AAR - long winded, long standing, long to finish...you get the point. Of all my work on this forum, my still favorite AAR of mine was completed in two months. Short, concise and a good story to boot, if I may toot my own horn just a bit. For the Glory of Persia was fun to write and it was just about sharp from start to finish. It meant less struggle throughout, but also that I obviously had great fun during the entire ride. This would be shorter, I am sure, had I completed it back in April or May as was intended. And I am sure, one cannot discount the wonderful comments I have had along the way which helped build that number. That I still have such great readers at this late stage is a wonderful compliment to you, the Paradox community. Thanks for that and I can only hope I make it pay off for you as we end.

Speaking of that - look for the next update likely tomorrow or Saturday. Thanks once again!

* * *

In the wake of the previous war, Emperor Friedrich was not pleased with the performance of our cavalry forces still. Thus, he instructed the training to favor a more eastern flavor much like our Magyar subjects used.

ReformedLatinHussars.jpg

And further, he felt that our naval strength was lagging behind the rest of Europe given how long we had focused on our army and production efficiency. To that end, Friedrich brought in a renowned naval scholar by the name of Karl Hirsch.

KarlHirsch.jpg

But in truth, only one aim remained in the Emperor’s mind as he went about these reforms and that was the final death of Burgundy. Yet another dispute over our boundaries provided just such an occasion and by 1769 it was war once again.

We quickly engaged the enemy in Liege and Holland and this time around, we decided a march straight to the capital of Dijon was the best way to affect a quick and painless war for our side.

BattleofDijon1769.jpg

By July of 1769, we had once more showed our mastery of the field such was the strength of our armed forces and we made a great showing in the Battle of Hainaut in an attempt to encircle Philippe XIV in Vlaanderen.

July1769.jpg

Yet Philippe remained his wily self and it would not be until August that we would find the Arch-Duke in Nevers, Philippe having slipped through our northern line.

BattleofNevers1769.jpg

We would best him once more and as the winter came upon us, a string of fortresses fell into our hands – Auvergne, Liege, Utrecht, Othe, Breda and Vermandois. In December we began a siege at Picardie and lasted through to the New Year when a fresh push began in Calais. Philippe was once more stuck in Vlaanderen and mid-month, we finally move to catch him in the trap we had set.

MoveonPhilippeJan1770.jpg

Victory would be ours but he would not surrender and proceeded to run from place to place in a vain attempt to keep his men in the field. Zeeland would fall to us soon after and Nevers and Brabant followed in March. By April, we had much of the Arch-Duchy in our hands and the war looked to end soon.

May1770.jpg

As the final Burgundian forces in Europe surrendered to us in May of 1770, we would also hear news from the colonial front that the war had gone well if not as lightening quick. But Sinaloa, Apache and Yaqui had all fallen to us and once the peace table was met, Friedrich decided to press that very issue. In addition to demanding Lothringen and Liege from Burgundy, so too did we demand Tepehuan, a rich colony in the new world.

PostWarColonies1770.jpg

Philippe had little to say in the matter and once more we proved our extreme superiority over the upstart Arch-Duke. Peace was had in October of 1770. But for how long?

Indeed....I think Burgundy is done. It's just that the AI won't let Coz1 take more than the 3 provinces apparently. Burgundy has no chance now to beat Germany. In reality here, if the Ai were less stubborn he'd have taken most of what Burgundy has left.

It's kind of like the last gasp of the Wehrmacht in WWII....A last gasp of strength before the final and total collapse. Burgundy has little left in the tank and Germany will have little trouble now whenever there is war between them.

That's always one of the things that made me wonder about the peace treaties with the 3 provinces and what not ; but it doesn't seem to be bothering the expansion rate too much ; i wonder if BB is under control , usually that's what I use to spark hyperexpansion without having to declare .

Phew... It took me a full seven days to catch up on this, but it was well worth the time spent on reading.. What an absolutely brilliant AAR! :)

It's a bit sad of course, that we are nearing the end of the timeline, but you can't get everything and I do look forward to your next big project, while keeping an open eye on this one.. After all, I didn't read through every single post in this thread just to leave it before it's done, now did I? ;)

Keep up the excellent work...

Is there any chance of you diplo-annexing your vassals in the Balkans? Or Milan for that matter? It seems like such a shame to have them so close to being part of your glorious kingdom, yet they arent. I imagine your BB may be too high at this point for annexing chances to be good. Oh well.
