It happened to me after 11 month of rule by the starting Earl of Desmond. I laughed for 5 real minutes, then proceeded to marry the killer to the new young Earl. Thankfully, he was more robust(XD) and ultimately outlived 3 wives, ruled 45 years and became King of Ireland

Does the martial score actually affect combat? It seems like it's pure numbers that win battles, even when my general has twice the martial score of the enemy and only 20% less troops.

There are a variety of things that affect combat. I would argue that given that martial is only really used for combat that it should have more power, but in reality there are several things about the combat system that need to be tweaked somewhat; for example battles should contribute significantly more warscore than they do currently and so on. That said, martial does affect battles enough that I make sure any big armies are led by the highest martial people I have, and I have on rare occasions won while significantly outnumbered.

Some battles can give 25% warscore. You have to defeat your enemy's entire army in one battle. It isn't the size of the armies that count, it's the proportion of size of the defeated army to the overall size of the entire army (and I'm not sure if it's the currently raised army or the possible maximum). So, you'll only ever get a high warscore from a single battle from a small enemy.

All things being equal, in vanilla, martial does quite a bit to the commander opposite you on the field.

You can also get a lot of warscore if you defeat the entire mongol doomstack in one go. I got 43 warscore for that once. Good luck!
