Does anybody know if the post-TNG Star Trek shows are worth the time and effort? I tried to get into Voyager a few years back but got well and truly bored after three episodes.

I really enjoyed Voyager actually. Granted I was a great deal younger, but I don't remember being bored. In fact it has one of the biggest variety between episodes of all the series iirc.

The only problem might be that we are used to much better storytelling nowadays, with series like Sopranos and Breaking Bad developing a story arch for dozens of hours.
The old 30min episodes with only a faint overarching plot to tie them together are bound to seem odd in comparison.

I ran into the same problem when trying to rewatch DS9 recently. Which, btw, is also worthy of consideration. It starts off terribly slow but really kicks off with the Dominion Arch

Voyager is hard to get into. It starts becoming better after the midway point of season 1, it does have some teething problems but it does become a really good show after that.

I just finished watching Babylon 5, and i'm currently watching Star Trek Enterprise.

Opinions:

Well, the first season of most things will be pretty bad. Even TNG had several clunky episodes at the start, but matured into by far the best Star Trek.

DS9 is very much worth it. I see it as following the same 'arc of quality' as TNG, but it never gets as consistently good as TNG was. I really like DS9 and it has some fantastic episodes to rival TNG; but TNG was overall the better show, no doubt.

Voyager I think has a different 'arc of quality'. It's just plain bad for maybe 5 seasons. I gave up on it, and eventually came back just to see it through. Surprisingly, now in the 6th season, those episodes are generally well-written.

Hey

Voyager is really good. Although I do prefer after Seven joins the show. I think the story gets more interesting at that point.

What others said. DS9 and Voyager are both worth it, but (like TNG and Babylon 5 for that matter) are slow to get going and rocky for a while at the start. DS9 has some of the most serialized storytelling Trek ever does and by the end really manages to give a feeling of events playing on a galactic stage. Voyager is for much of its run a bit of a throwback to the pure eposidic story-of the week style that made TOS great. It can bounce from really serious and thinky episodes to space opera set pieces to campy romps that refuse to take themselves seriously. I really enjoyed it, especially as a counter-point to the consistently more serious DS9.

Definitely worth it. DS9 isn't perfect but it really comes together as it progresses with some amazing fun character development and plots. Voyager has a choppy first season at times but once it gets under way it also is a fun one barring a few filler eps.

of course your mileage and opinion could vary. But I recommend trying both. Enterprise isn't terrible but the weaker of the three imho. Though the last season really ramps up the tension and it's a shame we didn't see where the story continued after it stopped running.

Might I also offer the suggestion of Farscape? One of my all time favourite sci fi shows. Great acting and chemistry of the cast and a fun story.

DS9 is the one worth watching. By season 3, it blows TNG out of the water entirely, but season 1 is a bit choppy, and the end is a bit silly. The other trek series are like TNG: pretty much garbage with the occasional gem.

Required warning on LoGH: it is long*. Really long. And if a main character doesn't grab you, you can be stuck with a really tedious character arc.

It also does have a lot of tropes, but it is working with a different set from a different era.

*Also required (singing):
It's LoGH, It's LoGH, it's Big, it's Heavy, it's Wood!
It's LoGH, It's LoGH, it's better than Bad, it's Good!

  • Europa Universalis IV: Cradle of Civilization
DS9 is the one worth watching. By season 3, it blows TNG out of the water entirely, but season 1 is a bit choppy, and the end is a bit silly. The other trek series are like TNG: pretty much garbage with the occasional gem.

Required warning on LoGH: it is long*. Really long. And if a main character doesn't grab you, you can be stuck with a really tedious character arc.

It also does have a lot of tropes, but it is working with a different set from a different era.

*Also required (singing):
It's LoGH, It's LoGH, it's Big, it's Heavy, it's Wood!
It's LoGH, It's LoGH, it's better than Bad, it's Good!
sci-fi tropes, but no anime tropes
