Hey chaps,

Hoping for a spot of advice. Me and two of my mates are going to be starting a new game of Europa but with a bit of a spin. Up until now we've tended to play nations at a good distance to one another and what usually happens is the games rarely get far as misfortune will befall one or the other.. (I have a bit more experience than them so usually ride through any rocky points). They don't really want hand holding and have had a game or two as some of the easier nations (Portugal\ottomans for example).

What we'd like to do is find three nations close to one another where their survival is kind of linked to one another basically where we can band together and help one another but without being invincible, and hopefully without getting in each others way too much. So split how we expand, one colonial, other west, other east Etc.

I've been trawling around the map for idea's but what I'd like is what your opinions would be for some good nations to play. The conquest of paradise seems perfect for this type of game with its federation features but anything in vanilla that springs to mind?

Thanks in advance.

Hello there, I often play co-op games with my brother but a three player co-op setup is quite a challenge. I can suggest:
  • Iberian Peninsula: Portugal/Castille/Aragon -> Would not be a very difficult game, except if faced by a French/Austrian Alliance. Advantage of this build is that Portugal and Castille can colonise their respective sphere, while Aragon can focus on the Mediterranean.
  • Scandinavian setup: Norway/Denmark/Sweden can instead of killing each other play well one with another. Norway would conquer Scotland and colonise, Sweden focus on the Baltics and killing Russia while Denmark can also go the colonial game, try to become HRE by getting involved in northern Germany and also conquer England because Knut.;)
  • HRE semi-minors: Hansa/Brandenbourg co-op are really fun games, with a clear division of labour. You could add a Dutch OPM into the mix for epic fights against France/Austria/Poland-Lithuania/Scandinavia/England all game long, on land as well as at sea. The Hansa player would have to go colonial early, and the Netherlands could do as well. Just discuss beforehand where everybody want to go, the world is a big place.:)
  • Islamic underdogs: One of my favourite, Aq/Qara Qoyonlu to Persia, Uzbek to Mughals and either Oman or Brunei/Ajeh to Malaya for the naval side. Dividing spheres of influence could be difficult however, and Malaya is a bit far while Oman and Persia would compete for the same node (Aden).

Bohemia / Hungary / Austria (all adjacent; easy I'd think: Bohemia expands north; Hungary expands east-southeast; Austria expands west)
Hesse / Saxony / Bavaria (mostly adjacent; slightly more challenging give Bavaria to the least experienced player; will face some problems from Austria)
France / Hungary / Castille (not 'adjacent' but all relatively close and so powerful, you can basically beat everybody; for even more powerful alternate Hungary with Austria)

- Naples which starts in a union with Aragon and might need help to break out of it.
- Byzantium which.. well, just needs help in general. Expands to Greece, then Turkey and the Middle East.
- Serbia which can help both of them, but itself has limited power

Sounds like three factions that are very geographically close yet can work well together (Naples expands to become the Italian hegemon against the HRE, Byzantium faces the Ottoman Empire and Serbia works to unify the Balkans). They are also all three underdogs, which help encourage teamwork. Another challenge is distribution of trade goods since you will share some common/competing nodes.

If you manage it well, you can have a good balance of powers. Even Serbia can become quite powerful since the slavic culture group is pretty wide (Bosnian, Croatian, Romanian, Bulgarian and Albanian are all in the same group)

Venice, Hungray and Poland.

Hungray and Venice share the Turks as a threat. All three could be intersted in a weak Habsburg.
Venice can expand through Italy, Mameluks and India. Hungray southeast crusading against OE and poland east to russia.
Or maybe change Poland with Portugal, for a strong navy against OE and Castille/Aragon

Milan, Venice and Naples. Instead of fighting for Italy, partition it while Milan goes for the HRE, and Venice and Naples expand in the Med, while bringing plenty of trade to Italy

+1 Or maybe Crimea (? Mamluks?), Kara Qonylu, Golden Horde. or Shan, Dai Viet, Pegu (or Ayuthaya/Brunei/Aceh). There's lots of possibilities in SE Asia or India. One of you would colonize/Westernize and the others piggyback.

Sweden, Novgorod and Teutonic Order.

Sweden can unite Scandinavia and go colonial; Novgorod can form Russia and conquer Asia; Teutonic Order can form Prussia and then Germany/HRE.

If you want more of a challenge, you can replace Sweden with Norway. You will need to beat Denmark-Sweden at game start, but this will reduce the conflict of interest between the 3 human players.

I play now with 2 friends - Russia, Poland and Serbia - all slavic nations, also Poland changes religion to Ortodox. So we spread Slavic culture and orthodox faith in world. We devide old world by trade nodes. Serbia gain all mediterrane and go to India. Poland(Commonwealth) get Germany and France lands in Europe and Crimea, Nogay and so on to Kashmir. Russia get Scandinavia and Brittish isles and colonise Siberia.

Granada, The Knights, Wallachia - Everybody needs help, nobody's able to grant it.

Aztecs, Kongo, Ryuku - The race to play catch up with the Europeans. Downside: you won't see each other for quite some time.

There's also the obvious stuff ofc, like France/Ottomans/Sweden, Castille/Austria/Portugal or GB.

you could do austria, poland and russia.

austria goes play the HRE, poland unites central europe and pushes into the balkans, while russia takes teh steppes. just be sure to discuss where the border will run between russia and poland.
