3 generals in the same battle (not a siege). What determines which one is in charge?

I sent 3 armies (2 from one province, the other from a different province) into a province to attack an enemy army. The 2 from the same province (martial skill levels of 10 & 11) were sent in on the same day, the other (martial skill of 2) was sent in 1 day later. I assumed (yeah, I know....bad move) that, like in a siege, the first general on scene would be in charge of the battle. Imagine my displeasure when "Mr. Doesn't Know Which End of the Sword to Hold" shows up on day 2 and assumes command of all the troops. Instead of a +2 or +3 battle bonus for command, we ended up with a -2 (and -1 for terrain and another -1 for a river crossing). Did we still win the battle? Yes. Did we lose a lot more troops than were necessary because some idiot who should only be in charge of a soup kettle tried to run a battle? Yes, again.

I tried it again and sent 1 general (martial skill 11) in on day 1, another (martial skill 7) in on day 2, and another (martial skill 2) on day three. The skill 7 was in charge that time.

And speaking of that idiot, there's an event that I've seen pop up occasionally (I forget the exact wording) in which one of your generals is unhappy about the loss of a battle and questions your battle plans. Your options are to grovel (take a 5 point honor hit), say you'll study and try harder (take a 5 gold hit), or tell this guy there wasn't anything wrong with your plans, just in the way he executed them (-25 relations hit). Can this be set up so that you're only questioned by a general that actually has some martial skill? It really grinds my gears when a guy with a skill of 2 comes in ranting about my (martial skill of 11) plans.

I can really second this gripe! Upon combining those armies, I would likely end up with a general not even from the units and with a skill of 2 or 3. If I could choose to replace him with a skill level 13 that is totally free now, I would! For an idiot to come to be complaining about battle plans, I want a 4th option to remove his head. It shows to all others that would defy my battle plans and execute them poorly into defeat, that they have thrown away all of their honor when approaching me.

Yes, I agree. We don't have any option to prepare our strategy. So, the right answer to that event is the second one. It is the general fault to lose the battle because he's stupid and weak. Not mine. because I don't do anything about it, at all.
