Following the First Civil War, and Lincoln's assassination, America had had a string of Presidents pre-occupied with the balance of state and federal powers. In the late 1870's reforms were made that increased federal control over certain state interests, mostly re-organizing the economy and state administration rights. Though of little effect, many states were angry that Washington was intervening in their affairs, correcting them. The President of the time, Hayes was willing to mend the rift between the White House and the outraded states, but a Hawk cabinet pushed to show strength, despite being against his own wishes, Hayes was elected rather dubiously, and owed a few 'favours' to leading Party heads, and so went ahead with even more reforms.

Many states were calling for Hayes' blood at such contemptable actions, but more states supported him as his reforms were helping the economy, if only very slowly. The reforms were passed and the country was spilt in two on the matter, but tension were growing.

In July of 1881, America was a powder keg, pro-state demonstrations and even terrorist attacks on federal targets were on the up. The Senate was a battleground, Illinois, Ohio and others pro-Federal, California, Texas and other southerners pro-state while in the middle, the 'New Englanders' Conneticut, Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire called for Washington to make a compromise.

On August 1st, the commander of Federal troops in Texas, which had been sent to stop any trouble, was killed in a clash with militia. His troops, mainly local volunteers, turned coat and joined the militia. Texas declared succession from the United States. California soon followed, riots broke out all over the south and in many of the industrialised cities, most notabley in New York.....

A variety of groups had been watching the Federal vs State debate with great interest in the city of New York. Politically the liberals, anarchists and socialists watched for the result, the city soundly pro-State. Commericially too the big industrialists wanted to see what effect it would have on them, though mostly conservatives, new taxes and restrictions the reforms created, meant their wallets moved them more to the left of the debate. By the time of the 'Texas incident', certain capitalists were encouraging the pro-staters to cause trouble, with financial backing. They hoped to cause enough unrest for the President to see the reforms caused more problems than they solved but their 'employees' were a little more effective than expected, the soldiers joined the rioters and seized Manhatten island, declaring a socialist commune, the 'Lucky Revolution' would go down as one of history most successful accidents

First proper post soon, this is my first AAR so be kind

Red Banner Rising

Ferocious street battles raged for days before the police joined the Revolutionaries

August 6th 1881
Commune Council Chambers (formerly City Hall)

Haines, Taft and the other men in the room were nervous, very nervous. Every other aristocrat or industrialist that hadn't fled the city had either been lynched or was awaiting 'trail' and execution. They had been waiting for the council to see them for over an hour now, and the occassional sound of firing squads wasn't helping their jumpy-ness. These men led by the steel tycoon William Haines, and business magnate George Taft, were responsible for this whole mess, they had painted themselves into a corner and in a panic had come to the lion's den in the hope those in their pay would get them out of the city.
"Where the hell are they?", asked Taft as he paced the room, rubbing his hands together
"I don't know, but stop doing that you're making me nervous just watching you" said Haines
"Bloody marxians, can turn a street riot into a revolution but can't be on time for a meeting"
"Your right the....", Haines trails off as foot steps can be heard in the hall outside. An armed worker walks in, the various capitalists back up sheepishly, he is soon followed by a short, stout man with a neatly trimmed black moustache, in an officer's uniform.
"Gentlemen, Im sorry about the wait, but I doubt you have any important meetings to get to, let me introduce myself I am Marshal Adams, commander of the People's Guard" he said in a strong New Yorker accent. Taft stepped forward, toe to toe with Adams, he stood almost a foot taller, looking down on the man.
"Listen here you damned little marxian how da", he was cut off as Adams head-butted him, he fell to the floor, with a broken bloody nose.
"Listen here you bloody capitalist pig, how much of a goddamn idiot do you have to start insulting the people that have you under armed arre....ah fuck it I aint working with this!" Adams pulls out his revolver and puts a bullet through Tafts forehead, splattering gore over himself and the other businessmen who stand motionless with looks of total terror in their eyes.
"As for the rest of you pigs, you're going to be under arrest for the remainder of the war, then we'll see what to do with you. You have a luxury the rest of your friends don't, .....life ......at least for a while", he says the last part with a grin, as he leaves soldiers come to escort Haines and the others away, he glances at Taft, shaking his head he mutters "Pompous Oaf" as he is led away.

Within days of California, Texas and Manhatten succeeding, Washnigton called on all loyal states to raise troops to fight, few volunteered as alot of the public had sympathy for the rebels if not their actions. Conscription was just as unsuccessful many deserted while still in training while others refused to join at all, with large anti-draft riots happening everywhere, espeacially the south. The New Englanders, refused to fight and declared neutrality in the matter, with the exception of Vermont. The new President, Atkins a hawk from Hayes' cabinet, declared them traitors for not willing to fight and called on troops to seize the state capitols, but just like in the successionist states they werent willing to fight against their own people and joined them, reluctently, rejected by their own country, the various leaders declared independance and The New England Commonwealth was formed.

The seccessionists formed a military alliance the 'Coalition of Free States', to combine their efforts and hopefully bring the American Goliath down. The Californians marched east, New Englanders west into Vermont, Texans marched everywhere, causing confusion throughout the mid-west.

The 50,000 strong People's Guard under Adams launched a quick, fast campaign to take the rest of New York State before moving south to confront a Union army of 40,000 in Philadelphia on December 28, supported by 20,000 New Englanders. Though poorly trained the militia 'Guard showed determination and ferociousness unexpected by the Union troops, they destroyed most of the enemy before they retreated into the city were Guardsmen and local rebels quickly slaughtered them in the narrow streets. Another Union army of 50,000 attacked not long after from New Jersey, though the defenders were well dug-in and at full strength. The inexperianced Guards poor rate of fire meant many Federal troops reached the lines, but they made up for it with sheer animal fury in hand to hand combat their conscript conterparts just couldn't match, and the attack was soon stopped the remainder of Unionists marcing back to Newark only to be annihilated by a New England army.

The sheer numbers the USA could bring to bear meant up until mid-April 1882 the war was static, exactly what was not wanted, US forces attacked Buffalo, Philadelphia and Newark several times but were beaten back everytime. On April 15, 10,000 Guardsmen and 20,000 New Englanders attacked Atlantic City, sucking in thousands of Unionists while Adams took a gamble and took most of his army to take Washington, leaving only a skeleton force in Philadelphia, the battle for the capital was hard, only the troops in Atlantic City were giving any hope for the operation, the New Englanders having retreated before the trap was closed, the last stand of 'Brandon's Bastards' going down in history and folklore, their final battle cry as they charged into the Federal seige lines became the motto of the People's Guard.
'God Save the Union, 'cos nobody else will!'

The sacrifice seemed in vain, as Adams' troops marched down Pennsylvania Av., Atkins had escaped a few days before. Only by sheer luck did a scout unit outside of Fredrickburg ambush the Presidential carriage guarded by a squad of Black Hats. Atkins signed a peace treaty on August 4th, the Commune gained the rest of New York State, Newark and Philadelphia. Peace treaties with the other Free States soon followed. The Commune had won it's freedom, now it had to keep it.

August 30th 1882
Commune Council Chamber
Grand Council

The council was sat at a long oak table, waiting for their leaders so they could begin their first meeting, along with the council members (all members of the communist party) sat the Security Minister Leone head of the Red Guard, next to him the French-born Information Minister Dereaux, who controlled the state newspaper, Worker's Voice amongst other things. They muttered amongst themselves until in stepped Marshal Adams, who with out a word sat down, then came in Chairman Wilson, the council stood up at once. "Good morning comrades", said Wilson as he sat in his chair looking through some papers, the council responded and the meeting began.

"First matter, the war has taken a great toll on the region and we are losing money monthly, we have ever since the war began luckily however we have managed to use the large estates of our former capitalist oppressors, and the generous donations made by the socialist parties of the world to stay out of debt. Comrade Harrison?"
"Yes, comrade?", the gruff steel worker said.
"As you are in charge of industry you will be given significant funds to reorganize and expand our factories and railway systems, you will find all the information you need in your office after the meeting".

The meeting continued like this for several hours going into issues as important as the International Worker Revolution to as mundane as the new symbol for the fire department, eventually the council members and Information Minister left, leaving Wilson, Adams and Leone to discuss military issues.

"I have an important announcement" said the Chairman "Adams you'll no longer be head of the People's Guard". Adams stared at him confused, as if Wilson had just given a wrong answer, as he spoke he rose out of his chair.
"What do you mean, why?, I won that goddamn war I..."
"Calm down Marshal, that's because the People's Guard is being disbanded, if we ever intend to be able to fight the United States again, we need a professional army, which you will be the commander of". With that Adams sat back down, knowing his position wasnt in jeopardy. Wilson continued.
"You are to raise two new divisions with artillery support, start building a defensive line along our border with the US, but the Guard won't be disbanded until after their next operation"
"Which is?"
"I will come to that, now Comrade Leone you are to get a new job, Intelligence Minister"
"Thank you, Comrade Chairman" said the quiet thin man, who was usually on the outside of meeting conversations.
"To help in the raising of the new 'People's Army' you are to gather your finest 2,000 men to form the core of a Red Guard division, you shall be the commander but as an army unit Adams will have overall control. Also as Intelligance Minister you are to recruit individuals suited to espionage, when our Diplomatic Corps starts setting up embassies, I want your spies with them, to gather information on all the major governments, especially London and Washington. You'll find all the information on your desk after the meeting"
"What would this next operation be Comrade?" Adams butted in obviously he had been thinking about it since it had been mentioned
"To invade New England"
"Heh,... our ally, can I ask why?"
"Its only been a month since the war, but Boston and Washington have very warm relations already, trade agreements, a possible defence pact, the US WILL eventually go to war with us again, and we dont need a powerful New England ready to pounce when we turn our back"
"What would our excuse be, the coalition would need a good one to let us do this without siding with New England"
"Texas will side with Boston simply because they hate us, communists and nationalist reactionaries don't mix too well, California won't fight us we're too close , but whether she'll join in at all it hard to see, alright comrades you have your objectives, I want the army in Massechusetts by the end of November at the latest" The three men shook hands and diparted for other matters of state

I admit I had to 'redirect' some US forces before the war, both to give me a fighting chance and to show the effect of mass desertions and anarchy that were going on in my story, also I gave all the successed states the resources to raise their reserves. Though i was very suprised when the commune and the others actually started to capture large areas, i had expected them to have caused a bit of chaos then been wiped out.

Ps. How do you get shots from the game itself to put on to photobucket?

Taken from 'The Manhattan Movement: International Socialism 1880-1920' by Harold Neuman

There is little to say of the New England War. Completely unprepared, Boston was taken in less than a week by Adams' new professional People's Army, while the People's Guard marched north and defeated a small force of Maine Militia at the Battle of Easton. The other members of the Coaltion of Free States, Texas and California, were taken by suprise. Texas declared war, but due to geography had no way of interfering. California, who until now was very close to the Commune, showed their disapproval and declared neutrality. In just over a month fighting was over, with the Manhattan Commune recieving Maine and New Hampshire, as well as monthly reparations. It as also at this time, and in part bacause of the new territories, that the Commune was renamed the American Socialist Republic

The Coalition fell apart after the war, with New England signing an alliance with the US and Texas also warming to Washington, while California sayed neutral, something that would see its descrutution

Good stuff Jape, nice to see the commune prospering.

For a screenie, press 'print screen' whilst in game, then switch out of the game to an image program - 'paint' is quite sufficient. Paste the screenshot into paint, and then save it where you want. The go to photobucket (or imageshack) and follow their instructions. This should give you a text 'link' to the image (hosted by photobucket) and you paste the text into your post to show the link..

I'm looking forward to seeing your success..

Remember to save it, though, as a .jpg file, it is smaller size wise and doesn't compromise too much quality.
