1) I had a status of Leaders 2/1 giving me some negatives on some status screens, yet I seemed to be allowed to have 8 leaders according to the tooltips - so why a -ve when I only have 2? (This is as Portugal)

2) I seemed to have a phantom unit on a transport - it had a size of zero, a name, but I could not unload it and I couldn't split the fleet because it said I was carrying a unit. Is this a known bug or ?

In the demo games I've played as Portugal, the number of leaders I've ever been allowed to have is 1, though you start with 2. The only number that I can think of that you're looking at to get the number 8 is the number of Military Monarch Points your nation earns each month, which is the number of 'power points' you have to upgrade technologies and purchase new leaders, but is not the maximum number of leaders you are allowed to have. If you hover over the 'Military Monarch Points' (the two crossed swords in the second row of the upper left of your screen) a tooltip will drop down telling you how many Military Monarch Points you get each month, and what factors it takes into consideration to arrive at that number. At the very bottom of that list it will say something like "Leaders: 2/1" if you're playing as Portugal in the demo. The first number (2) is the number of leaders currently in your employ, while the second number (1) is the maximum number of leaders you are allowed to have.

Unless I've misunderstood the game interface (which is a definite possibility), your upkeep only allows for 1 leader during the time frame of the demo, while playing as Portugal.

I believe the eight leaders signifies the maximum number you can have if you spend all you Military MP on leader upkeep. Obviously this would be a terrible idea, so the more important number is the one leader (for Portugal) with free upkeep.

Admittedly I spent much of the two demo games I played as Portugal and the Ottomans with an extra leader and ate the cost. Possibly a bad idea long term, but I wanted to play with different leader types.

OK - back in the demo. On the Military tab half way down it says:

2 Leaders (2/1). The tooltip for the leader tab says: "We can support 6 leaders (Rulers and their heirs for free), due to: Base Value: +1.00"

How does that base value +1.00 come into the mix? I understand from the posts above that Portugal has a base of 3, 4 added for the monarch, less one for the 2/1 bit = 6 in the current run through. Is it that 1.00 that gives me the free one? If so, is that free one from ideas or where? I guess I'm just struggling with where some of these numbers come from - maybe I need to spend more time with the manual.

OK - so I hired a new leader (now I have 3) and it says we can support 5 leaders. I think the message means to say "We can support 5 MORE leaders".

i've seen the exact same thing, and like noted above it probably just means the max leaders you can have 'total'. as far as how many leaders you can actually have without suffering a penalty to your MMP, a look at the military ideas might shed some light to this

no idea on the phantom unit. sounds like a buggy thing, so ought to get fixed eventually

The phantom unit is when you attach an army to a navy without cogs. Seems like they forgot to disable the button if you don't have transports in your navy and it creates the transport "tab" with no units attached.

As for the leaders thing, you can only have one "free" leader at the start of the demo. Some techs/ideas can give you more free leaders.
For every admiral/general/conquistador/explorer you recruit over your (/1) limit then you will get a negative (-1) modifier to your military points.
