I was hopping that 2 things woudnt be the same in EU3 as it was in EU2.

One is the piracy feature. Once, in a game as Spain, it became so boring to keep moving ships every day to fight pirates that I had to stop playing. Maybe this could be changed somehow...
Another one is when I tried to create an scenario with Brazil independent late XVIII century. I found it impossible to build cavalry divisions and others... This is very annoying, I dont know why they did it but I really hope paradox will remove it on EU3.

Ever played Hearts of Iron II? You can order naval units to conduct missions in areas and regions, which consist of several sea zones. If a similiar system is used in EU III you would just order a group of ships to conduct anti-pirate patrols for several months in an area like the Lesser Antilles, and they would travel through the sea zones there, searching for and engaging pirates until they became too weak or the time was up.

What I did - it's just I put small naval forces (2-5 ships) in each water region next to my provincies. Pirates appear with low morale and my forces destroy them, so pirates become going here and there. And since my forces are close to port they don't have attrition. They could stand there for centuries. Of course sometimes pirates defeat them, but this is much rare event and it's possible to manage.

Well, it seems almost certain that they would. However naval combat really hasn't been discussed yet, so it's better to be on the safe side.

I had a single big fleet and just sweep the coast at times.

then again, I usually didnt play naval nations, so I was dealing with armies most of the time and used fleets mostly for amphibious landings.

pirates were great for stopping other fleets from reaching my own as i was landing an invasion force. in this case it was a french crusading army trying to establish a tunisian outpost and in order to stop the tunisian fleet from interfering with my fleet was to cover their coast with pirates so that they would arrive off the coast of my navy weakened if not defeated.

There is an option in EU2 to have your ships go on Patrol, just setup the patrol route and they will continue to patrol it until you tell them otherwise. I would be amazed if they didn't keep that function for EU3

Yeah. Just make sure one of the stops points is back in port, other wise a lost battle will be a lost battle :D

Also, after a battle the orders get cancel, so you will have to reissue them. A combination of small stationary fleets, plus a couple of patrolling fleets should take care of the problem.

Eh, I don't know what the others are on about but you rightclick as usual, using shift if you want more than one waypoint. You then click on the checkbox that says "fleet on patrol". It's right next to the morale bar.

Also: A fleet whos patrol route is only one sea zone will become invisible after reload.

This is due to the so-called "whiteman value" used to model the technological differences between American natives and others. One check in the EU2 scenarios and modifications subforum, and this would have been cleared up quite easily. :)

The problem with this is that you need to re-issue the orders after every battle. When you have a naval battle v the pirates every second sea area then this is very cumbersome. The Hoi 2 system would be much better for a war against the pirates.

Yes but with patrol, if they ran into priates awaya from land, they would proceed to the next seazone and then move no further and rot.

GorSers method was the best, keep a couple of ships in every coastal zone and no pirates can popup and if they move in from adjacent zones, its usually because they have beeen defeated there and have low morale, they will then spend several months bouncing from one zone to another, repeatedly beaten by your coast guard ships because of low morale and then disappear.

Of course, if you got into war with someone with a biggish navy, you would have to pull in all the little fleets to avoid losing too many battles and war score.

I don't know if in later patches pirates spawn if you already have a fleet there, but if they do, putting 3 galleys and 1 warship everywhere will clean them up. It's not that big of a deal once you've become a big colonial empire. If they don't the solution is much cheaper: just 1 galley. The result: no more bloody pirates :D

Yeesh. I've been playing for 3-4 years and had never discovered that. I can't believe I missed it; it's so clearly marked in the interface. ;)

Thanks. :)

You should not use the patrol-function to keep your homewaters clear from pirates.

What you do is, as has been suggested, that you put one galley (yes, one is enough) in each of your sea zones. Then pirates will never spawn in these sea zones.

However there may be pirates sailing into one of these sea zones. But only after having lost a battle and thus, because of their low morale, they will lose the battle vs your single galley say 19 times out of 20 (or 29 out of 30 or whatever percentage low chance it may be). The 20th time it may lost the battle, perhaps gettins sunk, and then you need to send up a bigger fleet and destroy the intruders and send in a new galley.

---------

The use of the patrol-function is very limited. The most obvious occurence is when you want to explore a land province with an explorer and do not want to micromanage it yourself. Just a day ago in a MP game I as SWE had reached and explored the coast outside Gunagzhou and Shanghai but not detected the provinces themselves. I defined a a route for the fleet that was led by an explorer and made sure it made a visit to a port along the route. I then clicked the patrol flag and went about my other business. Then now and then I got the message that this or that province was detected. When both had been detected I let my explorer sail away on new missions.
