This bug has been around for a while. I keep dying in battle in battles I was not personally involved at. This is so annoying...

Yeah, i had this too... ruler has battle events and gains traits even if he's not leading the army. Also woman ruler can lead armies too, in 769 start.
Most likely you were leading a sub-unit within the army, rather than a flank.
