I recently started a game as the Byzantine Emperor. I dislike the hassle of having to grant duchies to the strategoi everytime one dies so I started granting them as regular titles. It was all fine till my character died and his son took over. Now I cannot hand out duchy titles that bounce back to the emperor when someone dies because it says I cannot hand out viceroyalties. It will only let me hand them out as viceroyalties. I don't know if this is an intended change that has been made or a bug, but an independent holder of a title should be able to hand it out freely to his vassals. At least it was this way until recently.

I have tried destroying them and recreating the titles but it will not let me precisely because I cannot destroy viceroyalty titles.

Yo,

it says I cannot hand out viceroyalties. It will only let me hand them out as viceroyalties.

I suppose you meant "I cannot hand out duchies", right ?

That's an interesting situation, could you upload your save so we can look at it ?

Are you using any mods by the way ?
Are you using Conclave and/or Monks & Mystics ?
Is your current character, who is unable to give duchies, adult already or still a child ?

The issue seems to have disappeared, though last night I tried quitting and loading and it was still there. I'm using all DLCs, a few personal minor mods that just tweak clothes and localisation (checksum still BPAH) and the ruler was an adult.

Sorry, I didn't explain it correctly. If I tried to "Grant Landed Title" the duchies that had been returned to me from dying viceroys did not appear as titles I could grant. However if I chose to "Grant Viceroyalty" they did appear on the list. If I tried to destroy these titles (being an independent emperor with primogeniture for all titles) it wouldn't let me do it, and it said I couldn't destroy viceroyalty titles.

As I say, the issue seems to have gone, maybe it took some time to change the viceroyalty titles into regular titles?

Hmm... well I'm trying to reproduce the issue as well, but no luck on my end.

If you have the issue popping up again, try to establish some connections : maybe you did something specific before it happens ? Maybe it's only when you grant the viceroyalty to some specific characters ? If you manage to get it again, anyway, don't hesitate to repost and add the save at the same time, maybe we'll be more lucky then.

Cheers,

Arthur
