Lo the AI won't accept marriages where it has already agreed to the betrothal.

If the AI thought he was to high in the line of succession then they should either have thought so before agreeing to the betrothal or break the betrothal but just not accepting is annoying as heck.

I think this only happens in extreme cases, like where a previously betrothed person is now a ruler and the marriage is matrilineal. It kinda makes sense, or at least it would if the AI would break the betrothal in addition to refusing to honor it.

No it does not if I betrothed a useful character to my daughter matrilineally and then grant him a title then he can't just say no I don't want to marry her, he was given the title because he was going to marry her. As it stands now I have to wait and actually marry her of to him before granting him a title and that's just cumbersome.

The devs could go two ways with this:

  • Either the AI honors betrothals in all cases without exception
  • Or, if conditions change such that the AI is unwilling to honor the betrothal once both characters reach adulthood (e.g. one of them becomes an heir or a councillor in that time), then the AI will break the betrothal itself, immediately on both parties reaching adulthood.
And most importantly, this should happen without exception. The player should never be left in the shitty condition of being unable to marry off their dynast without suffering the opinion malus of breaking a betrothal, when it was the AI and not the player that is in effect breaking an agreement.

They could make it a game rule, Ai will break betrothals AI will never break betrothals.

They could make it a game rule, Ai will break betrothals AI will never break betrothals.

I'm not sure that really needs to be a game rule, but if it were, they'd still have to fix the underlying problem of AIs not honoring a betrothal and then forcing the player to break it.

Also, I've noticed that if the betrothal was matrilineal, and on adulthood the AI will no longer accept the marriage, but they would accept a regular marriage, they will refuse that too, even if it would be more advantageous for them, on the grounds that it's different from the original betrothal... which now they won't accept. It's very silly.

I've got two in my current game. I betrothed two of my daughters to courtiers, then gave them titles, now they refuse to honor the betrothal. One because of "False Religion", and the other because "too high in the line of succession". Both were perfectly happy to accept the betrothals without the use of favors or the like.
