I'm currently in a Holy War, and had an army of about 11k troops, including retinues, holy orders, and levies. Moved in to enemy territory (probably halfway through the war), but realized too late that there was already a battle going on between my enemy and a neutral army. Since I didn't want the war score to go to the neutral army, I attempted to flee, and then remembered shattered retreat (I didn't want my army going halfway across the map), so told it to remain there.

And then my army just.... vanished. I might have gotten a defeat notification (I wasn't really paying attention), and suddenly my entire army was just gone. Poof. 1000 knight retinue, 2000 holy orders, 8k levies (I was fighting a force of ~3k enemy troops).

I guess that I *may* have lost the battle and that the losses were so terrible that my army was wiped out, but that certainly shouldn't have been the case when I outnumbered him by that much.

Sorry it's not much to go on...

Ok, figured it out. Apparently it happens when you tell your army to retreat (so you lose the battle), but then tell it to remain in place. Here are screenshots:

In the battle:

87DD885B7393D69895614AE6947D23D8BB47567C

I tell it to retreat, and then tell it to stay in place (battle shifts to pursuit), and this is the outcome:

48A50A3A5C7751E433163E35369390E26A1C0168

It says that I lost 152 men total (and should still have 11,424 survivors), but you can see from my army list that they've been completely wiped out.

I tried engaging the enemy in battle and then manually told my army to retreat and then right-clicked in the same province they where fighting in. But they are retreating correctly for me.

Do you have a save game or anything where this happens every time?
