As the title suggests, I've been having an issue playing as a merchant republic (no mods) where, during a few hundred years playtime, my CPU fan gradually goes apeshit.

The game will get to a point where the CPU fan turns into a jet turbine when playing any merchant republic game that has progressed 200-300 years (charlemagne start is what I typically use). Any other game with any other government / religion have not and do not result in this behavior, which means this issue is unique only to the merchant republic.

The 'workload' on the CPU fan isn't constant, however. It increases in intensity - and gets to absurd levels of noise - specifically when the game is paused, when I access the merchant republic tab, or if I open the trade post tab on the county window. The trade post tab results in the highest intensity. When the game is actually running at 3 or 4 speed, which is what I normally play at, the CPU fan chills out and runs more normally. This makes little sense to me. Also, I monitored my CPU's core temperatures very closely a number of times during play sessions, and the sensors showed that it never peaked past 56 C. Idle temp is 44-45 C.

If I had to guess, I would say that it has something to do with the trade posts that is causing this behavior. In both of my merchant republic games, the CPU fan gets to ridiculous levels seemingly only when the trade post count gets quite high. One game has 24-25 trade posts for my family / dynasty, the other 28. The AI, in comparison, has few to none due to their incompetence. I'm not sure if they would contribute to the problem if they had a larger amount or not.

My CPU fan acts like I'm running prime95 or something, when the load on the CPU does not seem to be anywhere near that intense. No other game or program, in the years I've had this system, have caused the fan to run so erratically. Let me state again that this DOES NOT happen in any other CK2 game that is not a merchant republic, regardless of religion.

I've not seen anything related to my problem on these forums or on the steam forums. I suppose this isn't as important as other issues like the massive amounts of reports of crashing and what not, but I'd really rather not burn up my fan or my CPU or anything crazy like that. I'd love to keep playing my current game, so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Are you sure it's not the GPU fan? This game taxes the video more than the processor usually.

If not, I don't understand why your fans would kick into high gear at only 56c? The game has no way of influencing the fans except by temperature.

I assumed it wasn't the GPU because I didn't think CK2 used up much of its resources... however, I decided to load up one of my merchant republic games just a moment ago and check the GPU temps after a few minutes of making the fan chug. GPU temp remained at 40-41 C in game, it idles around 33 C. Didn't seem taxed in the least.

It seems like it is the CPU fan. Could my motherboard not like something that CK2 does with merchant republics, forcing the CPU fan to freak the hell out or something?

The game is still entirely playable - just at the risk of the fan burning out, I guess. :/

Again, I don't see why the fan would run that hard when the CPU is only at 56c. That shouldn't happen until it gets over about 70c. I think you have a bios or other hardware problem.
