Command + Tab does not function for Mac users, while Alt + Tab works correctly if running in Windows instead. Is there a way this can be fixed or worked around?

This has been the case for some time, unfortunately.
The workaround is to hit cmd-shift-Q, for Quit. When the dialog pops up, click on any part of it except the OK button, and you'll be out of the game into the Finder, and Cmd-Tab will work again.
