I believe I've had learning focus and Charitable virtue when the event fired. The guy in prison was an adventurer and hardly related to a female who was released after giving mercy. As seen, portrait and actual target are different person.

The same happens with Carousing focus when you invite multiple characters to Carousing. You're getting friends with Duke but got king's portrait who was invited as well.
