The Republic page shows the respect for your heir as if it was calculated using your prestige, rather than your heir's prestige. However the election results when you die seem to work on the basis of your heir's respect being calculated using their prestige.

Presumably this is a display bug, and an heir's own prestige figure is the correct one to use for calculating respect.

To Reproduce:

Start a new game as Doge of Venice in 1066. The prestige in element of your Heir's respect on the Republic page should be 40, which is twice your prestige of 20, rather than twice your Heir's prestige of 0. In the console type 'prestige' which give you 5000 prestige. The prestige element of your Heir's respect is now 10050, twice your new prestige.

The respect displayed for your heir should now be many higher than the other Patrician's implying your heir should become Doge when you die. However if you type 'die' at the console, you will find Domenico Morosini -- the Patrician with the next most respect shown -- is elected Doge.

DLC: All but Horse Lords.
Mods: None in the reproducible scenario, but discovered whilst working on my own 'Founder of the Republic' mod.
