Running with all DLC except for Way of Life and Sunset Invasion.

  1. Go into single player character selection, 1066 or later.
  2. Select a Venecian patrician, not the doge.
  3. Change the date, you will keep selected the current head of the House of the patrician.
  4. Change the date to the Old Gods or Charlemagne bookmark.
  5. The head of the House isn't a patrician.
  6. Start the game.
  7. Your character is a commoner and the game ends immediately.
I'm not sure how exactly I got the corpse situation to work but I started with the above and then faffed about with dates until I got that to happen. The game ended immediately, did not go to closest living relative.

I'd imagine the fix to both of these would be to add a "is the character a count/patrician, and alive" check to the Start Game option. Though until then I'll just amuse myself with starting games as random guards and blacksmiths.

EDIT: according to this redditor this issue comes up a lot, probably should have checked if it's already reported ahead of time.
