Description: I can't select to play as Frederick of the Holy Roman Empire at 1155 (when he came to the throne) or for decades after this start date either. Play is grayed-out saying I can't play as a republic.
DLC: All major except Sunset Invasion
Mod: None
Steps to recreate:
1. Start game and go to single player, custom game from 1066 start.
2. Advance clock to 1155. Select Holy Roman Empire.
3. Play is grayed-out.
Edit: I found an odd work-around. I kept moving the start date up until after Frederick had died. This re-lit the play button. Then I dialed back the start date (Holy Roman Empire still selected the whole time) to when Frederick was still alive. Then he was playable. Very weird. This should still probably be looked at.
Edit 2: I think I have a clue about what is going on. Frederick starts his reign holding 2 non-merchant republic counties near Venice and is therefore, technically, a mayor. If the game is checking this before checking to see that he is indeed a feudal ruler, then that might explain the problem. Still worth a look.
