No, but the old doge shouldn't be able to keep it.

Republic titles don't require the holder to be landed, only a patrician family. He will hold the title until he dies and then it will be destroyed. This also occurs with non-titular Republic titles such as Genoa or Venice. These titles are the same as the Duchy (or Kingdom in the case of Venice) titles so they can be usurped. A titular republic title can't be held by a feudal lord, so you won't be able to usurp it. You can hold the Duchy of Lukania/Salerno of which the county of Amalfi is de Jure.

This sounds like the most likely scenario. As republics doesn't have to be landed, since they technically got all the "Houses" as vassal titles. I'll double check it with the team just in case. But it sounds like it would be WAD.

Titular titles don't have de Jure components and in such a case, if you hover over the title's "usurp" button, there will be a tooltip with red text that says as much. Generally, if there's a tooltip telling you why you can't do something, it's intended behavior, yes?

Sure. The usurping part would be WAD, as clearly stated by the game. I was referring to the part where a Republic title doesn't get destroyed when becoming "landless", like a feudal title would.

My understanding is that you cannot hold a "container" title like a duchy, kingdom, or empire titular or otherwise without a county within it.

You can't usurp titles that don't have de Jure constituents. When you hover the mouse over the greyed out "usurp" button, the red text tooltip says as much. Amalfi is a de Jure part of the Duchy of Salerno/Lukania. A county can't be de Jure of multiple titles simultaneously. You can usurp the republic titles of Genoa and/or Venice because those republic titles are the same as the Duchy titles and they have de Jure counties.
