I recommend putting them on your main defensive lines, with an actual threat posed on that side. Otherwise, use gun/missile/hangers on the station itself. They'll buff the station hp considerably while increasing the actual firepower it dishes out. And they can't get destroyed until the station is taken out.

That will be a waste of credits because a defense station cost about the same price as a destroyer but is half effective. It's better to park a fleet there now until they buff defense stations again

Hell, with a crew station, docking a fleet will even cost less in upkeep

Defense stations are effectively useless. They cost way too much in alloys and upkeep, making them ridiculously inefficient compared to fleets. In the late game they're easier to afford but by that point you're likely at the point where fleets can easily overpower citadels.

I wish they'd reduce the costs for them all around.

It would be cool when the Defense stations could be a part with the Starbase to make it stronger , like the modules (but designed by yourself instead from the progamm).

It's the alloy costs that make them unobtainable until mid game for me. The upkeep is never that much an issue cause trade pumps out so many credits. Though it might be rough for hive minds. I have not liked using them that much for defense except to help a fleet hold a chokepoint somewhere anyway though. Just because stations flip sides, and repair so quickly you only end up helping the enemy it feels like. But yeah those precious alloys are needed to build fleets now. You need every alloy you can get until well into mid game just for fleets, and only a station upgrade here an there.
