Hey there,

love the game, but unfortunately cannot continue playing since after the birdpeople awoke and I've upgraded my fleet, it's UNPLAYABLY slow, about 2 seconds per day on "fastest" speed. My rig is a i7-5930K with 64GB of RAM, 4TB SSD, Nvidia 1060. Played on Linux initially, but even installed on a dual boot Windows 7 as well, took my savegame there, same thing. It's a real shame because all the game was fun and reasonably fast, but now it's really entirely unplayable. This must be a bug, right?

My galaxy is fairly small as well, I have about 5 colonies and a fleet of maybe 300 ships. No mods installed, entirely Vanilla. Tried all of the stupid workarounds (disable steam, don't login to Paradox account, upgrade drivers, whatnot), nothing works. It's just horrifically slow. I can produce the savegame as well if you're interested, if that's a bug and it helps debugging?

Would be awesome if someone could help me. I really would like to finish the game.
Thanks
OB

have you tried deleting all gateways? the issue seems to be traderoutes pathing through gateways, as a lot of people said that disabling them or manually removing all of them helped performance significantly.

Also, what I have personally noticed, is that setting speed to x2 is actually faster in the late game than having it on fastest.

Thanks for the tip. I'mma try this out on my next playthrough

I have the same issues. I bought a brand new computer to be able to play on a map bigger than 'tiny.' I could until 2.2... and now I am back to tiny maps that lag like hell after about year 2400.

I mean, gateways are pretty important, but I'll certainly try a game without them if it helps.

2 seconds for days? you were still all the way playable dude .

i had to wait 10 seconds for day :D ....

unluckly just removing them wont realy help you , sure you will remove the first gateway opening , but FE will start spam them asap when they awaken .

so youshould remove gateways and FE . ai will not build them ( at least not until 2470 the last i saw in a game 2.2 )

It's damn shame. I love gateways in the late game to counter the slow travel speeds... but then, I never encountered a end game crisis before, because I can't endure slow tick speed in end game. >.<

Awww man what a shame. Thanks to all of your support. I do love gateways as well and placed a few, but it really became superslow after one of the FE had awoken.

I'll just hope that this gets fixed soonish. The game is great, but that's a real showstopper for me.

Anyways, thanks to all of you for your responses, at least now I know it's not my fault.

So, I've done some digging. Namely I wanted to confirm the root cause really are the gateways. Here's what I did: Savegame files are just ZIP files with a "gamestate" and "meta" file contained in them. First, I took it apart:

[~/.local/share/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/save games/unitednationsofearth2_-629118313/x]: unzip ../2429.10.02.sav
Archive: ../2429.10.02.sav
inflating: gamestate
inflating: meta

Then, edit "gamestate". There's a portion that starts with "bypasses={". It looks kinda like this:

bypasses={
0={
type="gateway"
active=yes
owner={
type=6
id=0
}
}
1={
type="gateway"
active=yes
owner={
type=6
id=1
}
}
[...]

I removed all blocks that contained type="gateway" entirely. Then re-packed the savegame:

zip ../cheat.sav gamestate meta

Aaaaand...... 2.5 days per second instead of 2 seconds per day. A FIVE TIMES increase in performance.

I conclude the root cause for late-game lag therefore really are the gateways. For a naive implementation of a Dijkstra pathfinding algorithm, this also makes sense, since every gateway can connect to every other gateway. If you naively build the graph, you therefore introduce O(n²) edges for n gateways.

However, I don't see why Dijkstra would have to be recalculated *every day*. If there's a structural change (e.g., new gateway added, route blocked because of political change, etc) then okay. But otherwise there's no need and the table of n² size (where n is the number of edges) could be cached. So I believe this is

1. A ridiculously naive implementation of pathfinding
2. Much easier fixable than re-writing the whole engine

I spell out #2 because that's a claim that pops up in many places and it's just BS.
