Description:
Playing as Toulouse, I take my boat off to the coast of Jerusalem to join the crusade. I try to save. But saving the game doesn't work.

It *looks* like it's working. "Quick save" or "Save game" will pause the game for a few seconds with the hourglass, as it would do if it wrote the data to disk. Problem is, no new save game appears in the file system.

Next, I try clicking on the "Cloud" tab in the save game menu. This instantly crashed the game when I had some DLCs switched off. After I switched them all on, I could see the contents of the cloud. But when I chose to save in the cloud, instant crash.

I might add, I've tried continuing playing this game two times. Both times, not many years into the future, the game crashes on no obvious stimuli.

DLC information:
Own all DLCs on Steam save Roland's Song and EUIV converter. All DLCs activated.

Do you perhaps have 32bit Windows 7/8/8.1 ? If so, AND IF you have 3gb or more of system memory installed, try this workaround:

1: Open Command Prompt (it's in Accessories in Vista)

2: Set it to be in Admin mode http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc947813(v=ws.10).aspx

3: Paste this in: bcdedit /set increaseuserva 2560

4: Restart

5: If you ever need to undo: BCDEdit /deletevalue increaseuserva

Thanks.

But it's even better. Windows XP 32-bit. So yes, it could certainly be that I'm hitting the memory ceiling.

Rationally, I couldn't see why I shouldn't report this as a bug in any case.
I think, if the memory is the issue, that the game should tell me straight out. At minimum "Memory has run out, game may not work correctly". Etc.

The optimal solution would indeed to actually have the game give you some form of error message if/when that happens. I'll ask the programmers and see if such a thing would be possible to perhaps add in the future. I think there should also be a "error writing save game" message in the game already. Not sure why that doesn't trigger. Might just be needed to tweak that message.

It would be great if you can pass on that message. I think it would alleviate plenty of user frustration and decrease the support burden.
I can't even be sure right now if the memory is my root problem. I might tool around a bit and see. But I was under the impression that a number of optimizations had been made after RoI.

What DLCs did you have turned off to cause the crash?
I had 2-3 unit packs off, 1-2 face packs, some songs and the customization pack turned off.
Anyway, in that case, the crash only happened slightly faster. I wouldn't call it an improvement if I still get a crash when I click the next GUI button.

Part Deux:

I removed all local files, meaning both the game installation and the files under "my documents" (XP), excepting my save games.
I installed again from Steam.
I switched off all graphical and musical DLCs, and some more. Leaving only gameplay DLCs like The Old Gods activated. I figure these measures should give the game some more memory to play with.

Load my game, play for two months, autosave, it worked.
Play three more months, autosave, didn't work. Okay, so I tried "save game". That worked.
Kept playing through four more years. Autosave didn't work. But "save game" did. Then, the game crashed on unknown stimuli.

For good measure, here's the latest save from this game: View attachment Toulouse1134_07_31.7z
(Strangely, the save wasn't in text format. Trying out cloud save made CK2 switch over to compressing my ordinary saves? Welcome to another bug report...)

----------------

If it's memory run out, the game is seemingly working much worse than it did for me around RoI. I used to be able to play centuries after switching off some DLC.

I'm sure that's the issue. Here's the XP equivalent of those steps:

- Select "My Computer" with a right-click and choose "Properties"

- Click the Advanced tab.

- Switch to the "Startup and Recovery" area and press "Settings"

- In the System startup section, click Edit. It should automatically start Notepad displaying the Windows boot.ini

- In the "Operating Systems" section, add /3GB /Userva=2560 to the end of the line that includes /fastdetect

- Don't forget to save the changes and close Notepad and all open dialog boxes.

- To let the changes take effect restart your computer

And I'd advise starting to plan your move to 64bit Windows and 4gb+ of memory. There's only so long that such trickery can help, the game gets bigger as more features are added (the bigger map in 2.1.x being the main such expansion).

I'm afraid the video drivers don't appreciate the /3GB setting. Played around with some different userva, didn't help.

Move from my 6 year old computer? Preposterous. I'll go play Victoria2. :p
