As mentioned before it was a close call - and interestingly enough it puts some light on how small units can defeat bigger units.
At Poltava Peter sought battle since he had heard that Charles was injured, but his superiority was so large that he couldn't even let all units be in formation at the same time, meaning a large part of the force was in camp.
And there are two things that are so horrible for morale in an unit that it is very much likely that the unit will spend a while running away.
One is being attakcked while in camp, unprepared and out of formation. The other is seeing a lot of your friends fleeing (or seemingly fleeing) the battle - when the rout starts behind you.
