A 1933 start date would be great as Germany or Japan, or even the USSR but what would you do as an allied country?

It would only make sense to have extended periods of peace if there was a ton of diplomatic and espionage stuff to do. I mean, I suppose you could have fun with the Stresa Front, League of Nations, invading Manchuria, unifying China, but I'm not sure that's enough to hold my attention.

Then there's the whole, "we know the big one is coming, so we budget national resources accordingly" problem. It just turns it into a big rearmament game for everyone.

Attack Germany early and set up Operation Unthinkable

You know, if a credible diplomacy system was set up, where it would be possible to convince alliance blocks to go to war (say, having the Brits and French respond to Soviet provocations, and willing to let Hitler slide), it might be interesting.

1933 would be extremely fun. The build-up for war with it's R&D and diplomacy is to me much more fun than the actual fiddling with the troops.

It would expand the game compared to Hoi3 with newer diplomatic and political situation (which obviously would require extra research and datagathering effort from devs:p). But it would create extra ways for alternate histories. For example, the SU buildup to democracy? Or Germany to become serious naval power? For Brits to turn autocrat and trigger WW2 by expanding it's empire to balkan (WWI revisited?), etc..

With proper Economic, Diplomatic, and Research systems? YES PLEASE Hell roll it back to 1920 and make it a real strategy game :( but if it's like HoI3 and just a bit dull until it all kicks off then leave it at 36

You would have to create a completely different game if Germany goes Communist in 1933.

Can't see why. WWII would probably resemble more an hot Cold War than the one we saw, but would still be there. In fact, unless every single dictatorial government falls at game start for some reason, there will be a war. Does it matter if it is against the Axis or the Comintern?

1066 start date, I'd like to see how WWII would have turned out if Harold wins.

The Sixth World War was primarily fought between Republic of China and French Empire (1947-1963). I can't recall of any other wars that were fought during the timespan of "our" WWII.

Anyway, I think it is doable. There's a WWI mod for HoI 3 already, as well as EvW in development. It would just need a decent team to glue them together. 1914-2014 :p

So this mean two things: there will be a DLC for 1933 startdate (it would be nice) or that we have to wait for modders to extend the pre-war period
Sure, why not. I'm sure a 1933 DLC/mod would get a lot of interest. We'll see about that when the game is released :)

How about a 1914 scenario? dizzle3's mod is awesome and feels like it's integral to the game, maybe this could be implemented in some way along with an interwar scenario.

Because I love playing Czechoslovakia and for this little country every day of peace before war with Germany is golden I would love those 3 extra years to prepare my defense, maybe try to get some allies... (Poland, I am looking at you... together we can into space!)

I'm probably in the minority on this one but I'd rather see Paradox put more effort into the later start dates than go earlier. At least in HOI3, the further you went from the 1936 start date, the less balanced/historically accurate the start dates tended to be. Despite that I still had some fun starting at the later dates to see if I could pull off being on the losing side, I'll probably like to try this again in HOI4.

Well, it was a tumultuos period for alot of countries, civil wars, national socialist parties and communist parties springing up.....some countries were just trying to stay whole post-WWI.

If there was enough stuff going on for you to decide on or work on, then I could see it happening for a 1933 scenario start. But, the game would have to end up resembling Vic 2 more to do this. Which, isn't all that bad of an idea, but probably hard to implement.

A lot of important events that affected WW2 did happen even earlier that 33, but starting in that timeframe or a bit earlier that 33, like 31, it would complete WW2 a lot more, here is the reasons why:

Many historians claim that WW2 started in 1931 with the Japanese beginning the invasion of Manchuria, an interesting campaign of the war in the east, that affected the whole political situation of Asia back then.

- Hitler was appointed Reichkansler - 1933

- The Night of the Long Knives - 1934

- Italian invasion of Ethiopia - 1935

Beside these events alot happened science-wize and build-up-wize in Germany in that period before 1936:

- Germany began its buildup deliberately against the Versailles Treaty

- As a key influence for Schwerpunktprinzip aka. Blitzkrieg, Guderian worked on his magnum opus, Achtung Panzer which was theorized on before 1936. A cooperation with Sweden and the Soviet Union made critical advancements in the design and theories relate d to the use of that, which was "illegal" in Germany at that time.

Besides that, i actually love the buildup period of the Hearts Of Iron series, because it affects how i play that game when that war in Europe really breaks out. And the years before that, normally goes really fast, so i do not really see why people could be against a possibility like that.

Anyway, it could make a cool mod :)

The game is supposed to have a more sandbox approach, so 1933 only makes sense.

And PLEASE PLEASE make achievements work with different start dates!!!
