Yeah but the hundreds don't actually make much game difference - in terms of a battle, it isn't going to be 200 men close. And as a trade off, the awfulness is way too much.
If you have 1.9k versus 2k, then it does make a difference, since 1k vs. 2k looks like a lopsided battle. There have been plenty of times I've wished for the hundreds of troops to be displayed.

Easy!!! Trying sieging with an army of cogs! no siege general can ever be good enough to help with that :-(

Hi,

In all of the screenshots from the upcoming patch, the troops are shown as (for example) 19.0K
0G7ssYG.jpg

I think this looks horrible and needlessly technical. The original solitary number was fine. What does this change bring to the table apart from making the map look cluttered and (I suppose) allowing WC people to have million + armies?

Paradox, can we at least have a rationale for this change ( or at least a way to turn it off without editing checksum)

Thanks!

How about in the economy tab when one country earns over 5 figures it screws up the column. That's more important.

Only thing that bugs me is the uppercase K, since "kilo" is normally abbreviated to a lowercase "k", eg "km" for kilometer, "kg" for kilogram, "kL" for kilolitre, etc.

"kilo" is represented by a small "k" (though that is more due to convention), "K" when used to refer to a thousand on its own is written as a uppercase "K". Unless they are referring to the weight of the army or the "K" is followed by another symbol, it should be "K".

My dictionary only has a thousand as a possible meaning under lowercase k. The closest uppercase K has is 1024 (in computing).

Point of UI is clarity of information. The decimal is fine, although there certainly needn't be a trailing zero. One could argue that rounding to the nearest five hundred troops (0.5, that is) is adequate. The K literally adds no information and is therefore clutter, whether people get used to it or not. Using an M for million is probably fine as it reduces the number of digits needing to be displayed and therefore serves a purpose and likely reduces (rather than increases) clutter.

In terms of distinguishing fleets from armies, why not use different icons (in addition to having the icon before or after the number)? Armies could keep their shields, and ships could have a flag (like in the Better Flags/Crests mod or whatever it's called).

That's not just a convention, it's a standard.

I say "due to convention" (not it is convention, poor choice of words by me) because it is lower cast because when the SI units were first created they were all lower case letters. The newer ones above 1 actually use upper case (Mega, Giga, Tera, etc); lower case "k" remained the correct form because it already was convention.

Does someone actually define it like that?

My dictionary only has a thousand as a possible meaning under lowercase k. The closest uppercase K has is 1024 (in computing).

You are looking at it the wrong way. "K" is not a unit prefix, it does not represent "kilo" (though it may have come from it), it just means 1000.

As far as I can see there is no dictionary definition of it, it is something of a slag/computing/business term. Wikipedia though (and a couple of other sites) seem to suggest uppercase "K" is the common form. Certainly it is not wrong to use "K" as some people have suggested. I know that "M" is the alternative letter to refer to 1000 as well (from Latin), and that is defined as uppercase.

Ultimately I think it is a matter of continuity, Wiz already mentioned that if you get a million troops it will say "M" and most things on the Map use uppercase (province and country names), it makes sense and is clearer to read.

This is a change for the worse. That 'k' looks absolutely fugly and makes it harder to read for me. And it was completely unnecessary. It must be removed ASAP.

Yeah. I was reserving judgement until I saw it.

Really don't like it. Reduces clarity. Adds nothing of value. Adds noise to the screen. On some zoom levels, it's easy to confuse with another digit, leading to several wtf moments.

I like the change. Genuinely.

I can easily live without it and revert back though.

EDIT: it should be a lower-case 'k' though.

Really unnecessary & puzzling change. It adds exactly no extra information and only serves to clutter an already cluttered interface, fixing a "problem" that didn't exist in the first place. The decimals is fine, but the "k" needs to go, or you should at least be able to hide it without resorting to mods.

I think that showing the decimal is really useful, I often shift+merge units and send the 0 stacks to recover in my territory, therefore seeing the stage of recovery with more details easily it great.
But the K is just unnecessary, I don't mind it that much but I agree that it would be better without it.

Decimal actually has a genuine use and can be really useful and helpful to look at army strength at a glance. On the other hand, putting 'K' is absolutely unnecessary and useless, and does nothing other than to make the UI harder to look at.

I think they use it during debugging and forgot to remove it before releasing...but if they put these farcical 'K's into the game intentionally, Paradox, this is a really, really crap design decision.

The capital K is correct. In English, a capital K means "thousands". A lowercase k is used with SI units, such as kilogram. Unless SI defined a new kilotroops unit, a small k is incorrect.

Anyway, I like the change. More information is good.
